Miley shoots for rare win over Padres
Sep 24, 2013 - 2:38 PM (Sports Network) - Louisiana-born lefty Wade Miley tries to reverse a career's worth of struggle against San Diego on Tuesday night when the Arizona Diamondbacks face the Padres in game two of a four-game series at Petco Park. The 26-year-old has won just once in eight lifetime starts against San Diego while dropping six decisions and compiling a 5.96 earned run average that's more than two runs above his career mark of 3.75.
Miley last faced San Diego on Aug. 28 in Phoenix and was on the short end of a 5-1 decision in spite of allowing just two runs on seven hits in seven innings.
He's pitched four times since and has split two decisions while allowing a combined 12 runs in 20 innings.
Miley is 4-6 in 17 road starts in 2013.
For the Padres, righty Tyson Ross again seeks his first victory since Aug. 10.
The California native was 3-5 for the season after a 3-1 defeat of the Cincinnati Reds in which he gave up a run on four hits.
In seven starts since, he's 0-3 and has seen his ERA climb from 2.75 to 3.24.
Ross is 1-1 in three career meetings with Arizona, the last of which occurred on Aug. 26, when he gave up six runs in six innings of a 6-1 loss.
On Monday, Nick Hundley's three-run homer in the sixth snapped a tie game and helped the Padres to a 4-1 victory over the Diamondbacks.
Hundley finished 2-for-3, with his two-out blast bringing in Chase Headley and Tommy Medica, who each singled in the frame and collected two hits apiece on the night. Headley also had an RBI.
Eric Stults (10-13) and three San Diego relievers made the advantage stand, with Huston Street completing the bullpen's hitless effort with a perfect ninth in notching his 33rd save.
Stults allowed just a run over 6 1/3 frames.
Brandon McCarthy (5-10) gave up the homer and was hit with the loss, giving up eight hits over six innings of work. Adam Eaton brought in the D'backs' only run. The team had just seven hits.
The Padres won nine of the first 15 games with Arizona this season, a year after winning the 2012 season series, 11-7.
