Defending champion Giants end season vs. Padres
Sep 29, 2013 - 2:31 PM (Sports Network) - Venezuelan righty Guillermo Moscoso gets a spot start to close out the 2013 season on Sunday when the San Francisco Giants wrap up a three-game series with the visiting San Diego Padres at AT&T Park. The 29-year-old gets the call in place of veteran starter Matt Cain, who was shut down for the remainder of the season.
It's the second start of the year and the 26th in the journeyman career of Moscoso, who has pitched for Texas, Oakland, Colorado and the Giants since debuting in the majors in 2009.
He won a career-high eight games with the Athletics in 2011 and split his initial four decisions with the Giants in 2013, picking up win No. 2 with a scoreless two-inning relief outing against Colorado on Sept. 11.
Moscoso is 2-0 in four career meetings against San Diego, including a scoreless, hitless two-inning stint at Petco Park on Sept. 2.
For the Padres, California-born righty Tyson Ross takes a ninth crack at a first win since Aug. 10.
Ross was 3-5 on the season after defeating Cincinnati, 3-1, but has gone 0-3 in eight outings since and his ERA has puffed up a bit from 2.75 after that victory to 3.10 following his last outing against Arizona.
Ross has gotten no-decisions in his last two starts while allowing just six hits and three runs in 15 innings.
He's 0-2 in four career meetings with San Francisco with a 4.50 ERA in 14 innings.
On Saturday, Chris Denorfia, Jesus Guzman, and Jedd Gyorko all homered to help the Padres defeat the Giants 9-3.
Tommy Medica and Guzman both had three hits for the Padres, who have won four of their last six games.
San Diego starter Eric Stults (11-13) tossed seven innings and allowed three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts. The left-hander has earned the win in each of his last three starts.
Yusmeiro Petit (4-1) picked up his first loss of the season. The right-hander lasted only 3 2/3 innings and gave up five runs on seven hits. The Giants had won in his six previous starts.
Hunter Pence, who reportedly signed a five-year, $90 million deal prior to the game, drove in two of San Francisco's three runs on a home run in the third. San Francisco's win streak ended at three games.
The Giants won nine of the first 16 games with the Padres in 2013, a year after winning the 2012 season series 12-6.
