Mets cap season with win over Brewers

Sep 30, 2013 - 1:27 AM Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - A pair of errors and an RBI grounder by Eric Young Jr. allowed the New York Mets to close the season with a 3-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers at Citi Field.

The Mets trailed heading into the home eighth, but Juan Lagares reached on an error to start the inning and raced home all the way from first when Jonathan Lucroy threw away Juan Centano's bunt. After a bunt single put runners on the corners and Josh Satin flied to shallow right, Young's slow tapper up the first-base line chased home the go-ahead run.

Frank Francisco set the Brewers down in order in the ninth for his first save, as the Mets avoided a four-game sweep. Young also scored the first run for New York, which finished 74-88 for the second straight year and put the wraps on a fifth straight losing season.

"It's indicative of the way we've gone about things...battling, battling, battling and battling again today to come up with a win," said Mets manager Terry Collins.

The Brewers had a four-game winning streak snapped and also wound up 74-88, finishing fourth in the NL Central.

Marco Estrada went the first seven innings for Milwaukee and was in line for the win after yielding one run on two hits with no walks and eight strikeouts. Brandon Kintzler (3-3) was saddled with the loss.

"I needed it," Estrada said of his solid start. "To come back and stay healthy and finish strong, it means the world. I hope I showed them enough."

Vic Black (3-0) picked up the win for the Mets with a scoreless inning. Jon Niese went the first six innings for New York and was charged with two runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Young's speed gave the Mets their first run. He led off the home first with a single, then stole second and third before just beating the tag at the plate on a shallow sacrifice fly to right by David Wright.

The Brewers scored two in the fourth with the aid of a questionable call. Jeff Bianchi led off with a single and took second on a base hit by Lucroy, but Young threw him out at home trying to score on a single to left field by Carlos Gomez. The runners advanced on the throw home and a walk to Yuniesky Betancourt loaded the bases for Sean Halton, who bounced to second for what appeared to be an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play. Halton was ruled safe at first, despite contrary replays.

Lucroy scored on the play and Logan Schafer's infield single plated Gomez for a 2-1 lead. Scooter Gennett followed with another single to center, but Halton was called out on a close play at the plate, although he appeared to be safe.

Game Notes

The Mets honored former catcher Mike Piazza before the game, inducting the slugger into the team's Hall of Fame ... Young finished the season with 46 stolen bases ... New York's Daniel Murphy went 1-for-3 and finished the year with an 11-game hitting streak ... The Mets were just 33-48 at home, the second-worst mark in the National League. Only the Chicago Cubs, at 31-50, were worse ... Milwaukee was 37-44 on the road.
