Cubs and Phillies look to gain ground on division leaders
Jul 30, 2007 - 1:01 PM Philadelphia (55-49) at Chicago Cubs (55-48) 7:05 pm EDTCHICAGO (Ticker) - The Chicago Cubs can gain a share of first place in the National League Central with a victory against the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday.
A major league-best 33-17 since June 3, the Cubs have moved within one-half game of the first place Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central. With the Brewers idle Monday, the Cubs are in position to own a share of the division lead for the first time since April 12, 2006.
Red-hot Ted Lilly (11-4, 3.46 ERA) will get the start for the Cubs in the opener of this four-game series. The lefthander is 7-0 in his last eight outings, including wins in each of his last six starts.
In his only start against the Phillies this year on May 13, Lilly allowed one run and three hits in eight innings during a 4-1 victory.
Cole Hamels (11-5, 3.63) gets the start for the Phillies, who have won three in a row to pull within 3 1/2 games of the first-place New York Mets in the NL East. The 23-year-old lefthander has to be hoping that his second career start in Wrigley Field will be better than his first effort here on August 24, 2006. Hamels lasted only two innings and was touched up for nine runs - five earned - and nine hits in an 11-2 defeat.
Acquired from the Chicago White Sox on Friday, Phillies second baseman Tadahito Iguchi is batting .345 (20-for-58) with four home runs and 10 RBI in 16 career games against the Cubs.
