Bonds continues home run chase on Wednesday
Aug 1, 2007 - 2:22 PM San Francisco (46-58) at LA Dodgers (57-49) 10:10 pm EDTLOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The chase to Hank Aaron's 755 home runs continues for Barry Bonds and the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday when they host the Los Angeles Dodgers in the second game of a three-game series.
Bonds, who is 1-for-9 with seven walks since hitting homer No. 754 against the Florida Marlins, finished 0-for-2 with two walks and scored a run for San Francisco, which won for the fifth time in its last six contests.
If he were to hit No. 755, it would be the 65th homer he has hit against Los Angeles, the second-highest number he has compiled against any opponent.
A home run by Bonds against Los Angeles would also give the Dodgers the dubious distinction of having two historic homers hit against them, as Aaron's 715th homer in 1974 that broke the record previously held by Babe Ruth came against Al Downing and the Dodgers.
Bonds is 2-for-8 with no homers against Mark Hendrickson (4-5, 4.58), who will look to end a personal three-game winless streak and avoid becoming the 445th pitcher to surrender a homer to the seven-time National League MVP.
Hendrickson took his second straight no-decision in last Tuesday's 7-4 setback at the Houston Astros, surrendering three runs and six hits over five innings. The lefthander has had moderate success against the Giants, as he is 1-1 with a 3.04 ERA in three starts and two relief appearances.
Rookie Tim Lincecum (6-2, 3.90), who is on a four-game winning streak, will look to start off August in same fashion he pitched all through July. He went 4-0 with a 1.62 ERA in five starts over the last month.
In his last turn on Thursday, the 23-year-old righthander silenced the Braves' offense over six frames in a 4-2 win, allowing two runs and six hits. This will be the first appearance he has made against the Dodgers.
