Miller, Tigers look for home cooking vs. White Sox

DETROIT (Ticker) - With the Cleveland Indians breathing down their necks, the Detroit Tigers turn to rookie Andrew Miller to help them get well at home.

Miller and the Tigers open an 11-game home stint against the Chicago White Sox on Friday.

Detroit closed out an 11-game road stretch with a 3-2 loss to the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday. It was the Tigers' eighth loss on the trip and saw their lead in the American League Central Division reduced to one-half game after the Indians shut out the Texas Rangers, 5-0, on Thursday.

Miller (5-3, 3.76 ERA) hopes for better success than his last two outings.

The 2006 first round draft choice allowed two runs and five hits in five innings in a 10-3 loss to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim last Saturday. That start followed a July 23 outing vs. the Chicago White Sox, where the 22-year-old surrendered five runs and a season-high 10 hits in a season-low 4 2/3 innings in a 9-6 victory. On both occasions, Miller did not receive a decision.

The White Sox counter with Mark Buehrle (8-6, 3.06) who was outstanding in his last start. The lefthander, who threw a no-hitter on April 18 vs. the Texas Rangers, shut down the Toronto Blue Jays last Saturday, yielding only eight hits in eight innings in a 2-0 victory.

In his last 10 starts, Buehrle is 6-3 with a 2.18 ERA. He is 11-8 lifetime vs. the Tigers, including 5-5 at Comerica Park.

The White Sox have taken five of nine vs. the Tigers in 2007, including 2-1 on the road.
