Uribe, Dye carry White Sox past Tigers
Aug 4, 2007 - 3:15 AM DETROIT (Ticker) -- Jermaine Dye homered and Juan Uribe belted a grand slam as the Chicago White Sox posted to a 7-4 triumph over the slumping Detroit Tigers in the opener of a weekend series on Friday.Dye opened the scoring in the second with a solo shot - his 22nd - over the left field fence off Tigers rookie Andrew Miller. It was the 2005 World Series MVP's sixth homer in his last nine games. He hit two in Thursday's win against the New York Yankees.
In the fourth, Chicago created some distance as Paul Konerko and Dye both singled and Scott Podsednik was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Uribe, who delivered his third career grand slam against Miller (5-4) to make it 5-0.
"I just glad that I was able to carry things over from my performance in New York," Dye said.
Dye continues to be impressive since the All-Star Break, going 27-for-84 (.321) with 10 homers, eight doubles and 18 RBI.
It was the 28-year-old Uribe's first grand slam since taking reliever Joel Pineiro deep at home against the Seattle Mariners on September 24, 2006. The shortstop now has 11 home runs this season.
"I'm swinging the bat good," Uribe said. "I was very happy to help my team and do what my team needed done."
Rookie Danny Richar walked and later scored on Alex Gonzalez's groundout that capped an impressive five-run frame by the White Sox, who also got a solo homer from Josh Fields in the ninth.
Chicago starter Mark Buehrle (9-6) gave up three runs and seven hits in eight innings to bounce back from his last outing vs. Detroit. On July 23, the lefthander was tagged for season highs in runs (seven) and hits (14) in a 9-6 loss at U.S Cellular Field.
"I felt a lot better today than I have in a while," Buehrle said. "I made a lot more pitches that I did the last game. Just overall body and arm wise, everything felt good, I actually wanted to go back out for the ninth."
Buehrle has pitched six innings in 21 consecutive starts.
Miller surrendered six runs and seven hits with five strikeouts in four frames. The 22-year-old southpaw left in the fifth with a mild left hamstring strain and is listed as day-to-day.
"I hurt it on the last pitch to Konerko in the fourth," Miller said. " I thought it was a cramp but it wouldn't go away. The doctors said it was very mild and I should miss the shortest time possible."
Miller's injury is just the latest to Detroit's pitching staff, as Kenny Rogers (elbow), Fernando Rodney (shoulder) and Joel Zumaya (finger) all remain on the disabled list.
All-Star Magglio Ordonez had a two-run double and Mike Hessman added an RBI single for the Tigers, who have dropped 11 of their last 15 games.
"We are in a funk right now," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "You have to be nasty to win this game, right now we are a 'nice' team that is getting its butt beat."
