Bonds set to haunt Padres yet again
Aug 3, 2007 - 3:10 PM San Francisco (47-59) at San Diego (57-50) 10:05 pm EDTSAN DIEGO (Ticker) - Barry Bonds continues his pursuit of homer No. 755 on Friday as the San Francisco Giants begin a three-game set against the team he has homered against more than any other team, the San Diego Padres.
If Bonds were to tie Hank Aaron's all-time record versus the Padres, he will do against the team he has haunted more than any other team in his career. The seven-time National League MVP has hit .318 with 88 homers and 220 RBI against San Diego.
The home run and RBI totals against the Padres are far and away Bond's best totals against any team he has faced. However, Bonds has not experienced near as much success in Petco Park since it opened in 2004, hitting just .178 (13-for-73) with three home runs and nine RBI.
Bonds has eight homers among his 34 hits in 127 career at-bats against Greg Maddux (7-8, 4.20 ERA). The four-time National League Cy Young Award winner has the distinction of being tied with John Smoltz, Terry Mulholland, Curt Schilling and Chan Ho Park for the most homers surrendered to Bonds over his career.
However, Maddux last surrendered a homer to Bonds on May 1, 1998, while he was pitching for Atlanta.
The 41-year-old righthander will be looking to snap a six-game winless skid due in part to a bullpen that has blown two save opportunities in his last three turns. In his last turn on Saturday, Maddux allowed three runs and five hits in a 3-1 loss to Houston.
Maddux is 0-4 during a seven-game winless streak, but history should provide some comfort for the righthander as he is 28-14 with a 2.87 ERA in 42 starts against the Giants.
On his own long winless streak is Matt Cain (3-12, 4.02), who is 0-3 in his last four turns and has not won since July 4. In Saturday's 4-3 win over Florida, he yielded three runs and six hits with seven strikeouts over seven frames in a no-decision.
In eight lifetime starts against San Diego, the righthander is 3-2 with a 2.01 ERA.
