Brewers score four in ninth to spoil Red Sox's home opener
Apr 5, 2014 - 12:39 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Lyle Overbay stroked a two-run double in the ninth inning to lift the Milwaukee Brewers to a 6-2 win over the Boston Red Sox in the opener of a three-game interleague set at Fenway Park. With the game tied 2-2 entering the ninth, Khris Davis led off the frame with a double. Scooter Gennett then reached on a bunt before Overbay smacked a double into the corner in right to clear the bases. Carlos Gomez followed with a single to center to score Overbay.
Later in the inning, Jean Segura reached on a force out, stole second then scored on Aramis Ramirez's base hit to make it 6-2.
Gomez finished 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI and Jonathan Lucroy went 2-for-3 with a solo homer for the Brewers, who dropped two of three to Atlanta in their opening series.
Marco Estrada allowed two runs -- one earned -- on four hits while fanning six over 5 2/3 innings. Brandon Kintzler (1-0) worked a perfect eighth inning to earn the win.
"It was hard to feel that ball. I'm not going to lie," said Estrada. "I didn't really have fastball command today, but I felt I made the right pitch when I needed to."
Will Middlebrooks hit a solo homer for the Red Sox, who received their 2013 World Series rings in a pregame ceremony on Friday.
Edward Mujica (0-1) gave up all four runs in the ninth to absorb the loss. Starter Jake Peavy surrendered two runs on six hits over six innings.
Boston played in its 103rd home opener at Fenway Park (59-44). The Red Sox took two of three from the Orioles in Baltimore earlier this week.
Lucroy opened the scoring in the second with a towering shot that cleared the Green Monster in left field and landed in the parking lot behind the stadium. Davis doubled two batter later before scoring on Gomez's single.
The Red Sox countered with a run in home half. Mike Napoli worked a leadoff walk then scored when Logan Schafer's throw skipped past Ramirez at third on Grady Sizemore's single.
The Red Sox tied it in the third when Middlebrooks laced a homer off the Sports Authority sign in left field.
"We had a couple of opportunities that we didn't cash in," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "I thought, first time we've seen Estrada, he kept us off- balance with a very good changeup. He pitched ahead in the count quite a bit."
