Mets spoil Braves' celebration of Aaron milestone
Apr 9, 2014 - 3:38 AM Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Bartolo Colon tossed seven scoreless innings and the New York Mets blanked the Atlanta Braves, 4-0, in the opener of a three-game set.The 41-year-old Colon (1-1), who went 18-6 with a 2.65 ERA last season for Oakland, bounced back after surrendering nine hits and three runs in six innings in a loss to Washington last Wednesday. He fanned five and yielded six hits in Tuesday's win.
"He attacked the zone, goes after hitters and pitches a quick game. He keeps the defense on their toes. It's a lot of fun playing behind him," Mets outfielder Eric Young said.
Ruben Tejada tallied a pair of RBI singles and scored twice for the Mets, who have won 3-of-4 since being swept by the Nationals in their season-opening, three-game series.
Aaron Harang (1-1) gave up a run on two hits and four walks while fanning nine for Atlanta, which has dropped back-to-back tilts on the heels of a four-game winning streak.
The Braves commemorated the 40-year anniversary of Hank Aaron's 715th home run in a pregame ceremony. Aaron moved past Babe Ruth on the all-time home run list when he went deep against the Los Angeles Dodgers' Al Downing on April 8, 1974 in old Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium.
"It was very cool," Atlanta third baseman Chris Johnson said of the ceremony. "It was an honor to put on a Braves uniform today and go out and watch that in the dugout."
The Mets opened the scoring in the third despite not recording a hit, then added two more runs in the seventh and another in the eighth.
Tejada walked to lead off the third before Young worked a free pass two batters later. Tejada moved to third on Daniel Murphy's flyout to right and scampered home on a Harang wild pitch.
Gus Schlosser came on for Harang to begin the seventh and surrendered a bloop double to Travis d'Arnaud, who crossed the plate on Tejada's base hit to right-center. Tejada advanced to second on Colon's sacrifice bunt and scored on Young's single to right.
Tejada's RBI single in the eighth made it 4-0.
Kyle Farnsworth fired a 1-2-3 bottom half and Jose Valverde twirled a scoreless ninth to seal the win.
Game Notes
Young and Murphy had two hits apiece ... Colon was 3-0 with a 1.57 ERA in three starts against Atlanta coming in, but they all came in 2002 when he was with the Montreal Expos ... The Mets were 3-for-11 with runners in scoring position.
