Goldschmidt leads Diamondbacks past Giants
Apr 10, 2014 - 7:22 AM San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Paul Goldschmidt belted his second homer of the season and drove in four runs as the Arizona Diamondbacks evened the three-game set at a game apiece with a 7-3 takedown of the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday.Goldschmidt's three-run shot in the first inning gave Bronson Arroyo (1-0) some early run support, and his sacrifice fly in the third proved to be the difference. Arroyo went five innings, allowing three runs on six hits. Josh Collmenter relieved the Arizona starter and went the rest of the way, tossing four scoreless innings for his first career save.
Gerardo Parra also homered and finished with three hits, three runs scored and two RBI for the Diamondbacks, who improved to just 3-8 on the young season. They'll look to take the series in Thursday's rubber match.
San Francisco got home runs by Michael Morse and Buster Posey, but former Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum (0-1) was smoked for seven runs on seven hits in just four innings.
"He was really off all night," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said of Lincecum. "It was pretty evident."
Parra led off the contest with a triple and Martin Prado walked to put two on for Goldschmidt, who crushed a no-doubter the opposite way to right field.
"You just try to get a good pitch and hit it and fortunately I was able to get us on the board early right there," Goldschmidt said of his homer.
San Francisco got a run back in the second on Morse's solo shot, but the D-Backs put two across in the third and fourth innings to pull away. Eric Chavez followed Goldschmidt's sacrifice with an RBI triple to right-center.
After Hunter Pence's RBI groundout to second in the bottom of the third made it 5-2, Arroyo helped himself by keeping the fourth alive with a two-out single to left. Parra followed with his first home run of the season.
Posey's two-out homer to left in the fifth resulted in the final margin, as San Fran failed to put any runs across against Collmenter. The Giants had one baserunner in all four innings against the righty, but never put a player in scoring position.
Game Notes
Goldschmidt is now batting 13-for-24 with seven home runs for his career against Lincecum ... Prado had two hits and two runs scored ... Arizona will send Randall Delgado to the hill on Thursday to oppose Giants' hurler Ryan Vogelsong ... Angel Pagan had three hits for San Fran.
