McGowan gets first win since 2008 as Blue Jays blank O's
Apr 12, 2014 - 7:24 AM Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Toronto pitcher Dustin McGowan picked up his first victory in the big leagues since 2008 on Friday, as the Blue Jays blanked Baltimore, 2-0, in the opener of a three-game set.McGowan (1-1) gave up five hits over 6 1/3 innings to record his first win since June 22, 2008. The right-hander made only his sixth start since the 2008 season.
"I think the most important thing is just feeling good," said McGowan. "I got the opportunity to pitch again and that's all I could ask for. Just trying to make the best of it."
Dioner Navarro had an RBI for the Blue Jays, who started a nine-game road trip on Friday. Melky Cabrera went 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 11 games.
Baltimore starter Chris Tillman (1-1) took the hard-luck loss after allowing two unearned runs on three hits while striking out six over eight innings.
"That was one of the best I've ever seen Tillman throw," praised teammate Adam Jones. "He threw a tremendous ball."
The Blue Jays scored the only two runs of the game in the fourth inning. Jose Bautista reached first on third baseman Jonathan Schoop's throwing error, moved to second on Edwin Encarnacion's single and raced home on another error by Schoop. Adam Lind hit a grounder to Schoop, whose throw to second ended up in the outfield. Another run scored when Navarro grounded into a fielder's choice.
Baltimore's best chance to score came in the fifth. With two outs, Nick Markakis, Delmon Young and Chris Davis singled to load the bases. But Jones flied out to end the threat.
Meanwhile, Tillman settled down and retired 12 straight batters before giving up a two-out single to Cabrera in the eighth.
Brett Cecil tossed 1 2/3 innings and Sergio Santos pitched a perfect ninth to secure his fourth save.
