Sizemore, Gomes blast Red Sox past Yankees
Apr 12, 2014 - 5:42 AM Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Grady Sizemore belted a three-run homer to back 6 2/3 solid innings from Jon Lester as the Boston Red Sox came through with a 4-2 decision over the New York Yankees. Both Sizemore and Jonny Gomes, who added a solo homer during Boston's four-run sixth inning, finished with two hits to help the Red Sox avenge a 4-1 setback to their bitter rivals in Thursday's opener of this four-game set.
"It was good to have a rally there in that inning," said Sizemore. "We've kind of struggled with Jon on the mound. It's nice to pick him up and get some runs for him."
Lester (1-2) shook off an early homer to Alfonso Soriano to limit the Yankees to two runs on six hits while striking out six and earning his first win of the season.
CC Sabathia (1-2) fanned nine over seven innings for New York, but gave up both Boston homers to absorb the loss.
"I'm light years ahead of where I was last year," Sabathia said. "As far as (stuff) I feel like I'm getting close."
Soriano and Ichiro Suzuki each went 2-for-4 for the Yankees, with Kelly Johnson delivering an RBI single in defeat.
Sabathia was masterful over the first five innings, surrendering just one hit while mixing his pitches well and continually getting ahead of hitters. He emerged unscathed from a 24-pitch fifth, but struggled badly in the sixth as Boston overcame a 1-0 deficit.
Gomes opened the frame by hammering a fastball left out over the plate to knot the score, and a check-swing infield hit by David Ortiz and a Mike Napoli single preceded Sizemore's tie-breaking blast, a no-doubter to right off a flat slider.
Lester served up Soriano's second homer of the season to begin the bottom of the second inning, then didn't allow a runner past second until the Yankees put together a two-out rally in the seventh. Suzuki singled and Brian Roberts drew a walk to extend the frame for Johnson, who snapped an 0-for-14 lifetime skid against the left-hander by ripping a sharp single to right that plated Suzuki and pulled New York within 4-2.
Junichi Tazawa prevented further damage, however, by getting Derek Jeter to fly out with the tying run on, then allowed just a Soriano single in the eighth to protect Boston's two-run advantage.
The Yankees mustered little as well against Edward Mujica in the ninth, with the reliever retiring the side in order to notch his first save as a member of the Red Sox.
Game Notes
Lester's win was his 10th against the Yankees since the start of the 2009 season, the most by any pitcher over that span, and he's now 8-3 lifetime at the current Yankee Stadium ... The Red Sox won for the first time in seven games this season when failing to score first ... Ortiz has now reached base safely in 25 straight games against New York ... Roberts finished 0-for-2 and has just one hit in his last 21 at-bats.
