Nats score four in ninth to rally past Halos
Apr 24, 2014 - 5:29 AM Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Adam LaRoche's RBI single brought home Jayson Werth with the winning run, capping a four-run rally in the bottom of the ninth which lifted Washington over the Angels by a 5-4 count in the finale of a three-game interleague set.In the ninth, the Halos picked up another insurance run as Raul Ibanez reached on a LaRoche error, advanced on a wild pitch and scored after a walk to Collin Cowgill thanks to Mike Trout's RBI single off Drew Storen (2-0).
Jose Lobaton greeted Ernesto Frieri (0-2) with his first homer of the season to cut the Nats' deficit to 4-2. Denard Span hit a one-out single and Anthony Rendon drew a walk, then Werth plated both with a double to tie the game prior to LaRoche's hit to left field.
"He (Frieri) just got a save the other night," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "It's in him. We just need to get him a little more consistent."
LaRoche finished with three hits for the Nationals, who fended off a clean sweep. Gio Gonzalez worked five-plus innings, giving up two runs on four hits and knocked in the other run.
"He left a fastball up over the plate," LaRoche said. "In that situation, just trying to hit something hard."
Trout and Albert Pujols each collected two hits, an RBI and run scored for the Angels, while Erick Aybar added a run driven in for the visitors.
The hosts picked up the game's first run in the second inning. Danny Espinosa reached on a one-out bunt single, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and scored when Gonzalez dumped a single to left.
The Angels scored twice in the sixth to take the lead. Trout worked a leadoff walk and scored when Pujols followed with a double, chasing Gonzalez. Aaron Barrett entered, only to give up a two-out RBI single by Aybar.
David Freese hit a leadoff double in the seventh, moved up on a J.B. Shuck groundout and came home with LA's third run on Barrett's wild pitch.
