Kluber takes on Angels aiming to build off last start
Apr 29, 2014 - 2:51 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Corey Kluber tries to follow up the first complete game of his career on Tuesday when the Cleveland Indians continue a three-game series with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at Angel Stadium.Kluber went the distance to beat the Kansas City Royals on Thursday, as he struck out 11 and limited them to just an unearned run and four hits to even his record at 2-2, while lowering his ERA to 3.90.
The right-hander became the first Indians pitcher (and seventh since at least 1914) to have at least 11 strikeouts with no earned runs or walks in a complete game since Len Barker did so on May 15, 1981.
"It was nice," said Kluber, who has never faced the Angels. "I really wasn't trying to make a bigger deal out of it than going out there and trying to get three more outs. Maybe that's why it worked out."
Los Angeles, meanwhile, will turn to its ace, right-hander Jered Weaver, who is 1-2 on the year with a 4.11 ERA. Weaver did not get a decision on Wednesday in Washington, as he held the Nationals to a run and seven hits in six innings.
Weaver was in line for the win only to see the bullpen implode for four runs in the ninth.
"I'll have five days," Weaver said. "That's what (stinks) about being a starting pitcher. You can't come back the next day and redeem yourself and pick up that win. It'll be a tough one for five days, but I'll go back out there and keep battling and keep competing like I do. Hopefully, the chips fall in place."
Weaver is 7-3 lifetime against the Indians with a 3.05 ERA in 16 starts.
In Monday's opener, Mike Trout hit a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth inning and the Angels beat the Indians, 6-3.
Raul Ibanez laced a two-run triple to cap a three-run rally in the eighth that began when J.B. Shuck reached base on an error by Indians first baseman Nick Swisher.
Erick Aybar also added a two-run double for the Angels, who snapped a two-game skid in the opener of their nine-game homestand.
Carlos Santana hit a three-run homer for the Indians, who have lost four in a row.
Justin Masterson (0-1) got his first decision of the season in his sixth start. He allowed seven hits and two walks in his 7 1/3 innings, striking out five.
"I thought Masterson was pretty good. He deserved to be out there in the eighth inning," said Indians manager Terry Francona. "He had handled Ibanez so well but it didn't work out tonight."
Left-hander Tyler Skaggs went seven innings, striking out six and giving up three runs on four hits and a walk, but Fernando Salas (2-0) picked up the win with a scoreless eighth.
Cleveland was 4-2 versus the Angels last season.
