Scherzer takes mound in finale with White Sox
Apr 30, 2014 - 2:54 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Max Scherzer goes after a third consecutive win on Wednesday when the Detroit Tigers wrap up a brief two-game series with the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.Scherzer beat the White Sox on Thursday, holding them to a pair of runs and seven hits and struck out 10 over six innings to up his record to 2-1, while lowering his ERA to 2.45.
"The White Sox are always a challenging team," Scherzer said. "They're always going to compete against me and grind out at-bats against me. I felt like they did that today. They were able to put runners on base, but I did a good job of pitching with runners on base, and I was able to rack up strikeouts when I needed to."
In fact Scherzer is 6-1 over his last 10 starts against the White Sox, eight of them quality outings. For his career he is 9-5 against them with a 2.69 ERA in 19 starts.
Chicago, meanwhile, will counter with righty Hector Noesi, who was recently claimed off of waivers from Texas. Noesi started the season with Seattle, but was released before signing with the Rangers. He has made six relief appearances in all this season and is 0-1 with a 11.45 ERA.
"Well, today is today, tomorrow is tomorrow," Noesi said before Tuesday's game. "For now, I don't plan anything. I just try to think and just go with it and do my stuff and make my pitches."
This will be Noesi's first start since 2012.
On Tuesday, Bryan Holaday's two-out bunt single broke a tie in the top of the ninth inning and sent Detroit to a 4-3 win.
A Chicago miscue helped put the go-ahead run 90 feet away, as Austin Jackson stroked a fly ball to right-center field with one away in the frame. Right fielder Dayan Viciedo got under the ball on the warning track, but it tipped off his glove, allowing Jackson to race around to third.
Ronald Belisario (1-3) then struck out Nick Castellanos for the second out before Holaday pushed a perfect bunt down the third-base line. Belisario sprang off the mound and fielded the ball, but his throw to first was high and Jackson scored to give the White Sox the lead.
"I noticed he was staring in and then he backed up and I thought I had a good chance to lay it down," Holaday said.
Joe Nathan worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth to nail down his fifth save of the season, while Joba Chamberlain (1-1) stranded runners on first and second in the eighth to pick up his first win with the Tigers.
Victor Martinez, Torii Hunter and Jackson each added an RBI for Detroit, which has won three of its last four games.
Adam Eaton and Gordon Beckham recorded an RBI and run scored apiece for the White Sox, who had a two-game win streak halted.
"We had opportunities, we just didn't cash in on them," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said.
Detroit split a four-game set with the White Sox last week.
