Bumgarner tries to pitch Giants to sweep of Braves
May 4, 2014 - 2:48 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Madison Bumgarner tries to pitch himself back into the win column when the San Francisco Giants target a three-game sweep of the Atlanta Braves Sunday afternoon from Turner Field.Bumgarner started 2-0 in his first three starts, but is mired in a personal three-game losing streak. He has allowed at least two runs in his last five outings and was reached for five runs -- four earned -- in five innings of a 6-4 loss to San Diego on Monday.
The left-hander issued a season-high four walks against the Padres and is 2-3 with a 3.74 ERA in six trips to the mound. Bumgarner has a 1-1 record in three road assignments and is 2-3 with a 2.92 ERA in six career starts against the Braves.
Atlanta will counter Bumgarner with a left-hander of its own in Alex Wood.
Wood tossed eight innings of one-run ball in back-to-back starts at Philadelphia on April 17 and April 22 versus Miami. Both contests resulted in 1-0 losses. Wood then was hammered for seven runs and 10 hits in five innings of a 9-0 loss at the Marlins on Tuesday, falling to 2-4 in six starts to go along with a 2.93 ERA.
The Braves are 2-4 in Wood's starts this season and haven't been much help scoring wise as evidenced by the three straight scoreless outings. Wood is 1-1 in two starts at Turner Field and he faced San Francisco once in relief, allowing two runs in an inning of work.
San Francisco squeezed out a 2-1 win in Friday's series opener, then handed the Braves a 3-1 loss in the middle portion of this set. Buster Posey, Michael Morse and Brandon Belt provided the scoring with a home run apiece and Ryan Vogelsong got his first win of the season with six innings of one-run ball.
"I was kind of fighting myself there a little bit," said Vogelsong. "I was maybe a little tentative at first, getting a little too fine on the corners."
Sergio Romo hurled a scoreless ninth for his ninth save.
The Giants have gone deep in 10 straight games and used homers from Angel Pagan and Morse to win Friday's game.
The NL West-leading Giants have won four in a row and eight of nine games, and will also visit Pittsburgh and Los Angeles on this 10-game road trip.
Atlanta continued to slump with its fifth straight loss Saturday. Julio Teheran surrendered all three home runs and worked seven innings to fall to 2-2 on the season. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter.
B.J. Upton drove in Atlanta's only run.
"We haven't had very much timely hitting lately," said Atlanta second baseman Dan Uggla, who had one of the Braves' five hits. "Everybody goes through stretches like this. We just have to end it."
The Braves had won four in a row before the current slump and last loss six in a row during an eight-game slide from May 21-28, 2012. They will also host St. Louis and Chicago (Cubs) on this residency.
San Francisco went 4-3 against Atlanta last season, but lost two of three at Turner Field from June 14-16.
