K-Rod blows save, but Brewers top Yanks
May 12, 2014 - 2:40 AM Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Rickie Weeks had three hits and scored the winning run in the ninth inning to give the Milwaukee Brewers a 6-5 victory over the New York Yankees at Miller Park.Weeks added a pair of RBI to help the Brewers overcome Francisco Rodriguez's first blown save of the season and take the rubber match of this three-game interleague set. His broken-bat double over the first-base bag off Adam Warren (1-2) with one out in the bottom of the ninth set up Mark Reynolds' game- ending single.
"It was great, you come back the next half-inning and do that? That's outstanding," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said.
Rodriguez (1-0), who entered the matchup 15-for-15 in save opportunities and had been unscored upon in 19 innings this season, served up Mark Teixeira's solo homer with two outs in the top of the ninth that knotted the score at 5-5.
Reynolds finished with two hits, while Brewers starter Matt Garza contributed a double and run scored at the plate.
Garza allowed three runs -- all in the first inning -- over five innings of work.
Teixeira ended 2-for-4 and scored three times in the loss, with Kelly Johnson and Yangervis Solarte each driving in two runs for New York.
"We weren't able to put multiple hits in innings," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.
Rodriguez set down the first two Yankee hitters after being called upon to protect a 5-4 edge and had Teixeira down to his last strike before the first baseman lofted a full-count changeup into the second deck in right -- his sixth homer in 12 games.
Weeks came through in his final at-bat, however, and advanced another base on Warren's pitch in the dirt to put the winning run on third with one out. Warren rebounded to strike out Lyle Overbay, but Reynolds shot a grounder through the right side to score Weeks without a throw.
Garza threw 40 pitches during a rough opening inning that put his team in a 3-0 hole, but RBI singles by Weeks and Overbay off David Phelps in the third closed the gap before the Brewers struck three times in the sixth to forge ahead.
Base hits from Jean Segura and Martin Maldonado that began the inning forced Phelps' exit and brought up Jonathan Lucroy, who greeted reliever Matt Thornton with a game-tying pinch-hit single up the middle. Logan Schafer ripped a double to right two batters later to bring home Maldonado, prior to Lucroy crossing the plate on Weeks' fielder's choice grounder.
Phelps was charged with four runs on eight hits over five-plus innings in his second start of the season.
Solarte's two-out single against Zach Duke in the seventh brought home Teixeira from second and cut the lead to 5-4, setting the stage for Teixeira's heroics two innings afterward.
Garza was shaky early on, surrendering a leadoff double to Brett Gardner and issuing one-out walks to Jacoby Ellsbury and Teixeira prior to Johnson's ground-rule double to right center. A sac fly to left off the bat of Solarte plated Teixeira for a quick 3-0 advantage.
The veteran righty didn't allow a runner past second over the remainder of his stint, however, and helped his cause by beginning the bottom of the third with a double that preceded Weeks' and Overbay's run-scoring hits.
Game Notes
Prior to the game, the Brewers honored the retiring Derek Jeter by presenting the Yankee shortstop with a golden bat and a $10,000 check to his Turn 2 foundation ... Milwaukee third baseman Aramis Ramirez, who injured his hamstring in Saturday's game, did not play and is expected to be placed on the disabled list ... Teixeira now has 12 RBI over his last 12 games ... Yankees hurler CC Sabathia, who allowed three home runs in Saturday's 5-4 loss, was put on the 15-day DL prior to the contest with inflammation in his right knee.
