Tillman, Orioles blank Royals
May 17, 2014 - 6:00 AM Kansas City, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Tillman tossed his first career shutout in the Baltimore Orioles' 4-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Friday.Tillman (4-2) gave up five hits and a walk while striking out three en route to the second complete game of his career.
"My personal goal is to get deep in the game every game," Tillman said. "I'll take more (complete games)."
Chris Davis hit a solo homer for the Orioles, who have won the first two of this four-game set. Nelson Cruz went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Kansas City starter Jeremy Guthrie (2-3) allowed four runs on eight hits over eight innings against his former team. Guthrie played with the Orioles for five seasons before being sent to Colorado in 2012.
The Orioles gave Tillman all the support he would need in the fourth inning. Manny Machado reached on a bunt single, advanced to second on Guthrie's throwing error and moved to third on a wild pitch. After Davis drew a one-out walk, Machado raced home on Cruz's single to right. Davis scored when Steve Clevenger grounded into a fielder's choice.
Tillman retired nine straight batters before giving up a one-out walk to Mike Moustakas in the fifth. The Royals put men on first and second with two outs for Norichika Aoki, who grounded out.
Baltimore tacked on another run in the sixth. With one out, Adam Jones and Davis hit back-to-back singles to put men on the corners. Cruz's sacrifice fly made it a 3-0 game.
Davis added a solo homer in the eighth.
"We never felt like we were in this one," Guthrie said.
