Tigers, Indians meet in rubber game

DETROIT (Ticker) - The Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians square off in the rubber match of the three-game set between the top two teams in the American League Central on Thursday.

After dropping the opener on Tuesday, the Indians defeated the Tigers and Justin Verlander, 11-8, on Wednesday and now lead the reigning AL Champs by 1 1/2 games in the division.

The Tigers ace, Verlander lasted only four innings, matching a season high by allowing seven runs.

Carlos Guillen and Magglio Ordonez each homered for the second consecutive game for the Tigers, who are just 16-24 since the All-Star break.

Detroit will send Nate Robertson (7-10, 5.13 ERA) to the hill. The lefthander has lost four of his last five decisions and has given up eight runs in 10 2/3 innings in his two starts against the Indians this season.

Cleveland counters with Jake Westbrook (4-7, 4.75). The 29-year-old righthander has won three of his past four decisions, including a seven inning one-run performance on Saturday at Tampa Bay.

Cleveland is 8-6 against Detroit this season.
