Rockies use 9th-inning rally to down Giants
May 21, 2014 - 5:56 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Nolan Arenado's two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the ninth inning sent Colorado past San Francisco by a 5-4 count in Tuesday's opener of a three-game series from Coors Field.Tyler Colvin's RBI double in the top of the frame off LaTroy Hawkins (2-0) gave the Giants a 4-3 edge, but Sergio Romo (3-1) walked pinch-hitter Justin Morneau to lead off the home half of the ninth before retiring the next two batters.
Carlos Gonzalez kept the rally alive with a solid single, then Arenado drilled a low line drive which rebounded off the top of the wall in left to end the contest.
"That's a great at-bat against one of the better right-handers in the game," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "We put together a great inning against a guy who's as close to automatic as there is. That's a tough position, staring back at a guy like that."
For the hosts, it marked the first time they recorded consecutive walkoff wins since doing it three games in a row from July 4-10 of last season.
Wilin Rosario finished with a two-run homer and drove in three for the Rockies, who were coming off a series win over the weekend against San Diego.
Gregor Blanco posted a two-run triple and Hunter Pence added a run-scoring hit for the Giants, who have dropped three of four.
"That's just tough luck," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "It's a game of inches man and we just missed."
Rosario doubled home Troy Tulowitzki in the home fourth for the game's first run, but the visitors responded with three in the fifth.
Brandon Crawford singled with one out and went to third when Colvin followed with a double, then Blanco ripped a triple to center which scored both runners. Pence's infield hit brought in Blanco for a 3-1 edge.
Arenado reached in the home sixth with a leadoff single and Rosario tied the game with his fourth homer of the season, a shot to left.
Rosario came up empty one inning later, fanning with two on against Jean Machi.
Hawkins looked like he was in line to take the loss in the ninth, giving up a single to Brandon Hicks and then what was the go-ahead double to Colvin.
"I think we're just a mentally tough team," Tulowitzki said. "We grind out wins."
