White Sox go for sweep of Royals

May 21, 2014 - 2:31 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Chicago White Sox certainly haven't missed slugger Jose Abreu the last few days. They'll try to complete a three-game sweep of the Kansas City Royals Wednesday when the American League Central rivals close out their set from Kauffman Stadium.

Abreu, who leads the majors with 15 home runs, was placed on the disabled list with an ailing left ankle on Sunday. He's in a walking boot and will be re- evaluated on Thursday in Chicago, although, an MRI earlier in the week showed no ligament damage.

The White Sox lost shortly after announcing his DL stint, but have responded with consecutive wins in Kansas City. On Tuesday, Adam Dunn did his part to pick up the slack, as he homered and drove in three to help Chicago to another 7-6 win.

The White Sox erased a five-run deficit on Monday in the opener en route to a 7-6 victory.

Andre Rienzo (4-0) earned the win after striking out eight over six innings, allowing two runs on five hits with two walks.

The White Sox have won all seven of his starts this season.

"The offense has been awesome all year," said Rienzo. "The team made it happen. It's not about me, it's all about the team."

Alex Gordon and Danny Valencia each knocked in two for Kansas City, which saw starter Yordano Ventura (2-4) take the loss after surrendering four runs on seven hits over six innings.

Getting the call for the ChiSox on Wednesday will be lefty Jose Quintana, who is 2-3 with a 3.67 ERA. Quintana beat the Houston Astros on Friday, as he limited them to a pair of runs and seven hits in five innings.

"I want to continue to do my job, throw a long game and keep the game close and give the team a chance to win," Quintana said.

Quintana has faced the Royals eight times, but is still looking for his first win against them. He is 0-3 with a 4.11 in those meetings.

Kansas City, meanwhile, will turn to right-handed veteran Jeremy Guthrie, who has lost his last three decisions. Guthrie's most recent setback came on Friday against Baltimore, as he allowed four runs and eight hits in eight innings to fall to 2-3 on the year to go along with a 4.76 ERA.

He's winless in his last seven starts and hasn't won since beating Tampa Bay back on April 9.

Guthrie is certainly no stranger to the White Sox, having faced them 22 times (20 starts). He is 8-7 lifetime versus them with a 3.58 ERA.

Kansas City took two of three from the ChiSox earlier in the season, but Chicago has won nine of 12 at Kauffman.
