HRs carry Giants over Rockies; Cain hurt
May 22, 2014 - 5:43 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Brandon Crawford, Hunter Pence and Pablo Sandoval each belted solo home runs as the San Francisco Giants got past the Colorado Rockies, 5-1, on Wednesday.San Francisco went to its bullpen early after Matt Cain exited with a right hamstring strain following his three hitless innings of work. Yusmeiro Petit (3-1) held Colorado to two hits over the next three frames, and four other relievers kept the Rockies' bats relatively quiet.
"We couldn't get things going," Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado said. "We didn't hit balls hard."
Jhoulys Chacin (0-3) gave up three runs on four hits and two walks over 5 2/3 innings to remain winless for Colorado, which had won three of four coming in.
The NL West-leading Giants used the long ball to bounce back from dropping the opener of this three-game division series in walk-off fashion.
Pence took Chacin's first pitch of the fourth into the bleachers in left- center, and it stayed 1-0 until the Giants put two more up in the sixth.
Sandoval launched a two-out, opposite-field blast, and Michael Morse followed with a double to end Chacin's outing. Nick Masset was greeted by a run-scoring double off the bat of Hector Sanchez, who was making his second straight start in place of the injured Buster Posey.
Crawford took Matt Belisle into the second deck in right an inning later, and Morse's RBI groundout in the eighth made it 5-0.
The Rockies, who were down to their last strike on Tuesday and won 5-4 on Nolan Arenado's two-run double, tried to put together another rally by putting their first three runners on in the eighth.
Santiago Casilla limited the damage, however, by getting Michael Cuddyer to ground into a run-scoring double play. Troy Tulowitzki flew out to strand a runner on third.
"It was a good bounce back win after a tough loss," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.
