Recker, Mets top D-backs in 2nd game of DH
May 26, 2014 - 4:49 AM Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Just hours after taking the loss in Game 1 of a doubleheader, Jenrry Mejia redeemed himself and nailed down the save in Game 2.Anthony Recker went 4-for-4 with a run scored and Daisuke Matsuzaka tossed six two-run innings in his first start of the season to help the Mets take a 4-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the series finale from Citi Field.
Daniel Murphy had three hits and an RBI for the Mets, who had lost four of five at home. Bobby Abreu had two hits and an RBI in the triumph.
Matsuzaka (2-0) struck out six, yielding just the two runs on three hits after pitching out of the bullpen in his first 14 appearances this season.
Three Mets relievers combined for two scoreless innings before Mejia nailed down his third save of the season.
"It's my first time pitching twice (in one day)," Mejia said.
Earlier in the day, Mejia allowed an unearned run in the ninth inning that proved to be the difference.
The D-backs turned to Zeke Spruill (0-1), who was called up from Triple-A Reno prior to the game. Spruill was roughed up in his season debut, allowing three runs on 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings.
"We're in a funk. We're not swinging the bats well at all. We didn't really give ourselves much of a chance," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said.
Both of Arizona's runs came in the second inning. Aaron Hill led off with a single and scored on Martin Prado's opposite field triple down the third base line. Cody Ross' groundout plated Prado to make it 2-0.
The Mets got a run back in the home half of the second, when Matsuzaka helped his cause with a broken-bat bloop RBI single to left.
Spruill made the lead hold until the fifth inning, when a one-out walk to Curtis Granderson set up the game-tying run. Abreu slapped the first pitch he saw all the way to the wall in left for an RBI double to tie it. One inning later, pinch-hitter Ruben Tejada singled home Recker, who doubled to start the frame.
After Trevor Cahill took the hill later in the sixth, David Wright singled to left. Tejada, who was on second base, tried to take home on the play and was gunned down by Ender Inciarte, aided by Tuffy Gosewisch's diving tag just before Tejada touched the plate.
The Mets manufactured an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth against Cahill. Chris Young led off with a walk, Juan Lagares moved him to second with a sac bunt and Murphy made it 4-2 with an RBI single to center.
Game Notes
The Mets left 13 runners on base ... Matsuzaka's single was just the fourth hit by a Mets pitcher this season. His RBI was the third of his career ... Arizona finished 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
