Ryu dazzles as Dodgers down Reds

May 27, 2014 - 4:08 AM Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Hyun-Jin Ryu had his perfect game broken up in the eighth inning, but the Los Angeles Dodgers held on for a 4-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Monday in the opener of a three-game series at Dodger Stadium.

After Josh Beckett twirled the 21st no-hitter in franchise history in the Dodgers' 6-0 win over the Philadelphia Phillies Sunday, Ryu retired the first 21 hitters he faced in order to help LA take a 1-0 lead into the home seventh.

Ryu then plated a run before scoring on Carl Crawford's two-run double that capped the Dodgers' three-run seventh inning to extend the margin to 4-0.

However, running the bases appeared to take a toll on Ryu, who served up a leadoff double to Todd Frazier in the eighth to snap a string of 17 straight hitless innings by Los Angeles hurlers.

"That long inning hurt him," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said of Ryu running the bases in the seventh. "It broke the momentum for him. At the end of the night, we got the win."

Ryan Ludwick followed with a single to put men on the corners and Frazier scored on Chris Heisey's sacrifice fly. Brayan Pena then singled to chase Ryu, as Brian Wilson entered from the bullpen.

Wilson promptly fanned pinch-hitter Devin Mesoraco, but walked pinch-hitter Skip Schumaker before Billy Hamilton smacked a two-run double into the gap in right-center field to bring the Reds within 4-3.

After Wilson walked Zack Cozart, Kenley Jansen entered and struck out Brandon Phillips to end the eighth before stranding the tying run on second in the ninth to nail down his 15th save of the season.

"Our silver lining was we rallied late," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "We have to hang tough. We've played a lot of close games, but unfortunately we've come out on the short end."

Ryu (5-2) struck out seven without issuing a walk to pick up the win for the Dodgers, who have won three of their last four games.

Johnny Cueto (4-4) absorbed the hard-luck loss after giving up four runs -- one earned -- on four hits and two walks over 6 1/3 frames.

The Dodgers manufactured a run against Cueto in the third, as Drew Butera smacked a leadoff single before moving to second on Ryu's sacrifice bunt two batters later.

Dee Gordon then slapped a grounder toward first that Frazier misplayed, allowing Butera to hustle around from second for a 1-0 lead.

Andre Ethier led off the fourth with a double, but Cueto retired the next nine hitters in order before walking Justin Turner to start the seventh.

Erisbel Arruebarrena ripped a ground-rule double two batters later before Ryu slapped a grounder to shortstop Cozart, who misplayed the ball, allowing Turner to score while Ryu reached first safely.

Manny Parra entered from the bullpen and got Gordon to tap one to third baseman Ramon Santiago, who fired to the plate to retire Arruebarrena.

Parra couldn't escape unscathed, though, as Crawford ripped a double to center to plate both runners for a 4-0 lead.

Hamilton nearly evened the game in the eighth with his bases-loaded double into the gap in right-center, but right fielder Yasiel Puig made a nice play to keep the ball from rolling to the wall and quickly fired it into the infield to force Schumaker to stop at third.

Jansen then fanned Phillips in an eight-pitch battle to leave the potential tying run stranded 90 feet away.

No team in MLB history has ever recorded consecutive no-hitters ... Los Angeles went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base ... Frazier was charged with his seventh error of the season ... Crawford stole his ninth base of the season.
