Yanks eye another win over Cardinals

May 27, 2014 - 2:50 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - It took 12 innings to decide Monday's series opener between the New York Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals, and the two will resume their three-game interleague set Tuesday night at Busch Stadium.

Brian Roberts delivered a go-ahead RBI single as part of a three-run 12th inning for New York on Monday, as the Yankees rallied for a 6-4 win. All three runs were charged to Cardinals reliever Randy Choate.

"It was a huge win for our team," Yankees left fielder Brett Gardner said. "A lot of guys stepped up, the bullpen did a great job and guys came through with some big hits. That was a really good job getting us going there in the last inning."

The win marked the Yankees' third extra-innings victory in their last seven games. Overall, they have won six of their last nine on the road and entered Tuesday trailing red-hot Toronto by two games in the American League East.

"They keep playing, and they never give at-bats away, and they keep making pitches and defensive plays," manager Joe Girardi said. "It's a team that expects to win when they go out there every day, and we just keep playing."

Meanwhile, the Cardinals lost for only the third time in their last 12 games. They trail Milwaukee by 1 1/2 games for the top spot in the NL Central.

The Redbirds will turn to right-hander Lance Lynn to try to even the series. Lynn, who is facing the Yankees for the first time in his career, has turned in quality starts in three of his last four starts and owns a 3.60 ERA on the season. He gave up two runs during a 30-pitch first inning against Arizona his last time out, but then settled down and pitched five scoreless frames.

For New York, David Phelps will get a chance to face the team he grew up rooting for as a kid in St. Louis.

"You grow up thinking about playing on this field," Phelps said. "Obviously, you don't think about doing it in a Yankees uniform, but it's really cool. You walk out and you see the Arch. There's small things like that do make it fun."

Phelps is coming off a loss against Chicago despite tossing seven innings of two-run ball. He fanned eight batters and walked only one.

This series marks the first meeting in nine years between these two organizations.
