Teheran's arm, bat boost Braves over Marlins
May 31, 2014 - 5:49 AM Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Julio Teheran tossed 7 1/3 strong frames and went 2-for-3 with a run scored to help the Atlanta Braves regain sole possession of first place in the NL East with a 3-2 triumph over the Miami Marlins in the opener of a three-game set Friday at Marlins Park.Teheran (5-3) served up a two-run home run to Giancarlo Stanton in the first inning, but blanked the Marlins from there to keep his team in the game.
"I think Teheran just made really the mistake to Stanton," Miami manager Mike Redmond said.
Chris Johnson got the Braves on the board with an RBI single in the sixth before Teheran opened the seventh with a double and scored on Jason Heyward's triple to left, tying the game at 2-2.
"I was just trying to put the ball in play and that's what I did," Teheran said of his double. "I think that was the biggest play of this game."
B.J. Upton followed with a sinking liner to left that Christian Yelich made a diving grab on, but Heyward was able to tag up from third to give Atlanta a 3-2 lead.
Teheran then retired the side in order in the home half before departing with a runner on second and one out in the eighth. Luis Avilan entered and flied out Yelich before David Carpenter grounded out Ed Lucas to end the inning.
Craig Kimbrel spun a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth to nail down his 14th save of the season. Heyward and Teheran combined for four of the eight hits for the Braves, who had lost four straight games to fall into a tie with the Marlins atop the division.
Tom Koehler (4-5) was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs on seven hits and four walks over seven innings. Adeiny Hechavarria registered two of the five hits for Miami, which had a two-game win streak halted.
Teheran hadn't allowed a run over his last two starts, spanning 15 innings, but had his scoreless streak snapped in the first when Stanton followed Lucas' one-out single with a drive into the foliage in straightaway center field.
Stanton's 16th homer of the season increased his RBI total to 51, making him the first Marlins player in franchise history to rack up 50 RBI before June.
Neither offense managed much from there until the sixth, when Justin Upton worked a leadoff walk and Evan Gattis singled before Johnson ripped a base hit through the left side of the infield to slice Atlanta's deficit in half.
Heyward tripled into the gap in left-center field to score Teheran in the seventh before crossing the plate on B.J. Upton's sac fly to left.
Game Notes
Kimbrel recorded his 153rd career save to move within one of John Smoltz's franchise record ... Teheran struck out five and scattered five hits with a walk over his outing to improve to 4-0 in six career starts against the Marlins ... Miami turned four double plays in the setback ...
