Ortiz, Red Sox pound White Sox

Aug 25, 2007 - 3:55 AM CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Boston Red Sox picked up right where they left off in Game One.

David Ortiz homered twice and Curt Schilling pitched six strong innings as the Red Sox pounded out 13 hits in a 10-1 defeat of the Chicago White Sox in the nightcap of Friday's day-night doubleheader.

Boston also won the opener, 11-3.

Kevin Youkilis homered and Manny Ramirez and Mike Lowell each scored a pair of runs for the Red Sox, who improved to 4-1 on their season-high 10-game road trip and own the best winning percentage (.605, 78-51) in the major leagues.

"It was a long day, but it was a good day," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. "We did a good job, came out and played a good game. David swung the bat very well. We did some good things, and David was right in the middle of it."

Ortiz finished the contest with four hits and three RBI, including driving out the first pitch in consecutive at-bats for his third multi-homer game of the season. The four hits tied a career high for the All-Star slugger, who has accomplished the feat 11 times in his career and twice this season.

"We've got to try and win as many games as we can," Ortiz said. "We've been here so long (today), that's why I was swinging at the first pitch every time. (But) we've got to try and save some (runs) for New York."

Schilling (8-5) is 2-1 in four starts since being activated from the disabled list on August 6. The 40-year-old held the White Sox to one run and three hits while striking out three and walking one.

"Our offense has played really, really well," Schilling said. "We're starting to get a little bit of a push here. We're starting to play all facets of the game really well, and that bodes well."

Boston did much of its damage in the fourth inning, overcoming a 1-0 deficit with five runs. Dustin Pedroia was issued a walk to begin the inning before Ortiz connected for his first blast of the contest.

Ramirez and Lowell followed with a single and a double, respectively, and Bobby Kielty drew a walk one out later. Chicago starter John Danks then yielded an RBI double by Coco Crisp before being pulled after only 3 1/3 innings.

The outing matched the shortest of the season for the rookie.

Danks (6-12) gave up five runs and five hits while walking two. The 22-year-old lefthander, who is 0-6 in his last seven starts, became the first White Sox pitcher to go 0-5 in August since 1957.

"It was a real tough outing for (Danks)," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "It was a tough day for everyone. I think that's one of the reasons they are in first place and we are in last place. They hit better than we did, they pitched better than we did. They have a pretty good lineup, and the way we pitched, they're better."

Kevin Cash capped the five-run frame with an RBI single.

Gavin Floyd took over for Danks but did not fare much better. The fellow rookie served up Ortiz's second home run of the night in the fifth and, after walking Ramirez and Lowell, gave up Youkilis' three-run blast.

Chicago's lone run came on Juan Uribe's solo home run in the second inning. It was the shortstop's 14th blast of the season.

The White Sox have lost 11 of their last 13 and now sit in last place in the American League Central Division, 16 games below .500 (56-72). It is the worse position the club has been in all season.

"(Today) was 12 hours of my life wasted, and I'm never going to get it back," Guillen said. "We talk about the pitching staff, but we got one run and five hits."
