Power display helps Red Sox down Rays
Jun 1, 2014 - 6:34 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Brock Holt and Jackie Bradley each hit two- run home runs as Boston took down Tampa Bay, 7-1, in the second edition of a three-game series from Fenway Park.Jonathan Herrera finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Red Sox, while A.J. Pierzynski and Mike Carp each knocked in a run.
Recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket before the contest, Rubby De La Rosa (1-0) tossed seven scoreless frames, yielding four hits and striking out eight.
"He was outstanding," Red Sox manager John Farrell said of De La Rosa. "The biggest difference from a year ago to what we saw tonight was the changeup. It's an outstanding changeup."
Kevin Kiermaier's inside-the-park homer was the lone meaningful offense for the Rays, who have lost five in a row.
Jake Odorizzi (2-5) was yanked after 3 1/3 frames, charged with six hits and five runs despite fanning six.
Boston pushed across the first runs of the contest in the third. Herrera reached with a one-out single and Holt cleared the low wall in right for his first career homer to make it 2-0. Xander Bogaerts followed with a walk, Pierzynski singled, both moved up on a wild pitch and the former scored on a Carp fly to center.
"The home run was a 3-2 pitch," Odorizzi said. "The guy hasn't hit a home run all year. I'd throw the same pitch again."
Grady Sizemore singled and stole second in the fourth, moved up on a Bradley groundout and scored on Herrera's squeeze bunt. Odorizzi was pulled for Cesar Ramos, and he later uncorked a wild pitch that moved Herrera to second and gave a free pass to Bogaerts. Pierzynski lined a single to center for a 5-0 game, then David Ortiz missed a grand slam by a foot for the final out.
Sizemore singled with two down in the fifth and Bradley launched his first homer of the season to right center for a seven-run cushion.
Alex Wilson entered in the eighth, only to give up a leadoff round-tripper to Kiermaier aided by Bradley's misplay in left center which caused him to collide with the wall and the ball to hit him squarely in the face on the carom.
David DeJesus hit a two-out double, but Ben Zobrist grounded back to the mound to end the frame. Wilson then stranded James Loney on second in the ninth.
Tampa put runners on the corners with two away in the second, but Holt snagged a sizzling grounder from Sean Rodriguez and threw to first for the final out.
