A's down struggling Yanks in 10 innings
Jun 4, 2014 - 5:58 AM Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Brandon Moss belted a pair of solo home runs, including the go-ahead shot in the top of the 10th inning, as the Oakland Athletics handed the New York Yankees a 5-2 loss in the opener of a three-game series.Jed Lowrie added an RBI double and Kyle Blanks had a run-scoring single against Adam Warren to stretch Oakland's lead in the 10th, with Stephen Vogt coming through with a clutch pinch-hit double that tied the game at 2-2 in the eighth.
Moss' blast off Warren (1-3) helped the A's record their fourth straight victory and made a winner of Dan Otero (5-1) after he tossed a scoreless ninth.
"It feels good. Any home run feels good but in an extra-inning game it feels really good," said Moss.
The Yankees got a boost from Mark Teixeira in his return to the lineup, with the first baseman driving in both New York runs on a single and a solo homer after sitting five of the last seven games with wrist soreness. Warren faltered in the 10th, however, getting tagged for three runs and three hits while retiring just one batter, as the Bronx Bombers fell to 1-4 on their current homestand.
"We've just been struggling the past week or so," said Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner. "We need to get out of it."
Both starting pitchers performed well while not factoring in the decision. New York's Hiroki Kuroda held the A's to a run and two hits over 6 2/3 sharp innings, with Scott Kazmir striking out a season-best 10 in 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball.
Teixeira had given the Yankees a 2-1 edge by launching a Kazmir fastball into the Oakland bullpen in the bottom of the sixth inning, and the score remained that way until New York reliever Dellin Betances issued a two-out walk to Alberto Callaspo in the eighth that preceded Vogt's game-tying drive to the base of the wall in right center.
Neither team threatened in the ninth, but Moss hammered Warren's full-count offering into the second deck in right to put the Athletics ahead in the 10th. A walk to Yoenis Cespedes was followed by Lowrie's RBI double that extended the margin, with Blanks singling home Lowrie two batters later for a 5-2 lead.
The Yankees then went down in order against Sean Doolittle as the left-hander picked up his sixth save.
After waiting out a rain delay that pushed back the game's start by one hour and 12 minutes, the Yankees had success against Kazmir early on. Gardner and Jacoby Ellsbury each delivered first-inning singles before Teixeira's blooper down the right-field line landed in play for an RBI single.
Kazmir then found a groove, surrendering just one walk while setting down 16- of-17 batters prior to Teixeira's go-ahead homer, and Moss pulled the A's even by crushing a Kuroda sinker well over the center-field wall to lead off the fifth.
Kuroda had faced the minimum before giving up Moss' blast, with Oakland's lone two baserunners over the first four innings erased on double plays.
