Angels return home after horrid trip to face White Sox
Jun 6, 2014 - 2:39 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim turn to Jered Weaver on Friday night looking to put a horrid road trip behind them as they open up a three-game series with the Chicago White Sox.The Angels return home following a 3-7 road trip, losing five of the final six on the trip. They ended the trek on Thursday with an 8-5 setback to the Houston Astros.
Starter Tyler Skaggs surrendered four runs on six hits and three walks over five-plus innings to absorb the loss, while reliever Cam Bedrosian struggled in allowing three runs on four walks in the eighth inning.
"We just couldn't hold them whenever we cut into the deficit," said Angels manager Mike Scioscia. "There were some things I liked about tonight, and we'll take those positives and bring them back to the field tomorrow."
One positive was Mike Trout going 2-for-5 with an RBI and run scored. Trout returned to the designated hitter spot after sitting out Wednesday's game with a back injury that forced him out of Tuesday's opener early.
Now Los Angeles will turn to ace Weaver, who was denied a third straight winning start on Sunday at Oakland.
Weaver went into the meeting 6-1 with a 2.01 earned run average in his previous eight starts, but matched a season high by giving up five earned runs over six innings. The right-hander also was charged with an unearned run as well as 11 hits.
Weaver sits at 6-4 with a 3.33 ERA on the year and the 31-year-old has dominated the White Sox over his career to the tune of a 7-2 mark with a 1.59 ERA in 10 meetings.
One day after turning 26, Chicago's Andre Rienzo will try to put a tough outing behind him as he faces the Angels for the first time.
Rienzo has dropped back-to-back starts and was lifted on Saturday versus San Diego after 3 1/3 innings and 80 pitches. The righty was charged with three runs on seven hits and two walks, falling to 4-2 with a 4.26 ERA on the season.
The White Sox won for the sixth time in nine games, besting the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-1 on Wednesday. John Danks hurled 7 1/3 innings of one-run ball in the rubber match of a three-game set, limiting the Dodgers to one hit before giving up a one-out double to Dee Gordon in the eighth frame to end his night.
"John was great," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said of his starter. "He has made some adjustments. His control was better and he had more zip on his fastball. Our guys are pitching well and the bullpen is doing their job."
Leury Garcia and Adam Dunn homered for Chicago, with Garcia going deep for the first time in his career.
The Angels have won seven of their past 10 against the White Sox.
