Choice's HR carries Rangers over Indians
Jun 7, 2014 - 5:58 AM Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Michael Choice's homer in the seventh inning broke a tie and proved to be the difference in the Texas Rangers' 6-4 win over the Cleveland Indians on Friday. With two outs in the seventh, Choice stepped in against Marc Rzepczynski (0-2) and stroked the first pitch he saw just over the wall in right to give the Rangers a lead that would hold up.
Adrian Beltre added an insurance run in the eighth with a sacrifice fly to center that plated Elvis Andrus.
Yu Darvish (6-2) earned the win after going seven innings, yielding four runs on nine hits with eight strikeouts. Joakim Soria pitched the ninth inning to record his 13th save of the season.
"Not every night is everything going to go your way," said Rangers manager Ron Washington. "Even though we handed (Darvish) a 4-0 lead. He was able to keep us around until we were able to scratch some runs and we did."
Choice ended 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Rougned Odor added a two-run homer for the Rangers, who had lost four of their last six coming in.
Lonnie Chisenhall hit a three-run homer and Asdrubal Cabrera went 3-for-5 with a homer and two runs scored for the Indians, who had their six-game winning streak snapped.
Texas used a four-run second to grab the lead, but Cleveland chipped away at the margin over the next couple of innings.
With two outs in the top of the third, Jason Kipnis singled to put runners at the corners, then Chisenhall yanked one over the wall in right to cut the deficit to 4-3.
Following strikeouts by Mike Aviles and Michael Bourn, Cabrera poked his sixth homer of the season to tie the game in the fourth.
Cleveland had its first two batters in the sixth reach via singles, but Darvish maneuvered out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts of Aviles and Bourn and a groundout from Cabrera to end the frame.
"We had an opportunity, (but) give (Darvish) credit," said Indians manager Terry Francona of the sixth inning. "He made some really nice pitches."
Earlier, Alex Rios singled with one out in the second before Chris Gimenez doubled down the left-field line. Leonys Martin plated Rios with a sacrifice fly to center and Choice brought Gimenez around with a single to left. Odor then capped the four-run frame with a shot to right.
