Indians seek .500 mark in game two with Rangers
Jun 7, 2014 - 2:31 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - After dropping game one of their four-game set with the Texas Rangers, the Cleveland Indians will look to once again climb back to the .500 mark on Saturday at Globe Life Park in Arlington.Josh Tomlin earns the starting nod against Texas after tossing a 5 2/3 innings no-decision against the Colorado Rockies June 1, in which the Indians won, 6-4. Tomlin surrendered four hits, three runs (2 earned) and struck out eight batters - the second time in as many outings he's fanned eight.
Tomlin enters the contest sporting a 3-2 record with a 3.06 earned run average on the season. He's stuck out 30 batters compared to allowing just five walks in six appearances - including five starts.
In one career game against the Rangers, the 29-year-old righty pitched seven innings of four-hit ball, giving up two runs.
He'll face off against Nick Tepesch of the Rangers, who was rocked in his last start. Tepesch allowed seven hits, five runs (4 earned) and two walks in two innings of a 10-2 defeat at Washington, which resulted in his first loss of the season.
In four starts this season, Tepesch has gone 2-1 with a 4.43 ERA, 17 strikeouts and seven walks allowed. The 25-year-old right hander has faced the Indians once in his career, in which he went five innings and gave up five earned runs on eight hits.
In his first start this season, Tepesch recorded a season-high eight strikeouts, something he hasn't come close to replicating.
Yu Darvish improved to 5-1 in his last six starts on Friday by leading the Rangers to a 6-4 win.
"I think the strike zone was a little bit smaller today, so I had to be creative," Darvish said after the game. "So I started throwing cut fastballs and sliders to throw the other hitters off."
The Rangers took a 4-0 lead over Cleveland in the second inning, capped by a two-run homer by Rougned Odor.
Lonnie Chisenhall belted a three-run home run in the third inning for the Indians, and Asdrubal Cabrera smacked a solo shot in the fourth to tie the score at 4-4. But Michael Choice broke the knot in the seventh with a home run to right, giving the Rangers a one-run lead they would only build upon.
Marc Rzepczynski took the loss for Cleveland - his second on the season - after Trevor Bauer lasted 6 1/3 with four earned runs.
