Hill, Diamondbacks edge Astros
Jun 10, 2014 - 11:52 PM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Aaron Hill drove in two timely runs to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 4-1 victory over the Houston Astros from Chase Field.Paul Goldschmidt went 2-for-3 with a solo homer and two runs scored and Martin Prado tripled for the Diamondbacks, who have won six of their last eight games.
"We've been playing more consistent baseball," Goldschmidt said. "If we do that, we are going to give ourselves a chance to win."
Bronson Arroyo (6-4) tossed seven solid innings of one-run ball, allowing six hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Arroyo is now 10-1 in his last 13 starts against the Astros.
Jon Singleton supplied three hits and a run scored for Houston, which entered the game with wins in four of its last five.
"Singleton has swung the bat well," said Astros manager Bo Porter. "He has the capability of being a really good hitter and using his power."
Astros starter Brad Peacock surrendered just one run on three hits across six frames, but Josh Fields (1-4) was tagged with the loss after giving up two runs -- one earned -- in the seventh.
The Diamondbacks broke the 1-1 tie in the seventh. Fields took the mound and was greeted with a line-drive triple from Prado that eluded a diving Dexter Fowler in center field. Prado rounded third on Hill's sacrifice fly to center.
Two batters later, Ender Inciarte reached first on a fielding error by Houston shortstop Jonathan Villar. Pinch-hitter Cody Ross' double then landed into the center-field gap and brought around Inciarte to make it a 3-1 game.
Hill's RBI double in right with two outs in the eighth accounted for the final score.
In the first, Goldschmidt crushed a Peacock fastball over the wall in right that splashed into the pool to give the D-backs an early 1-0 lead.
The Astros had a chance to draw even in the second after loading the bases, but Jose Altuve grounded into a force out to leave the runners stranded.
Houston tied the game in the sixth. Singleton stroked a leadoff double, moved over to third on Jason Castro's groundout and raced home on Matt Dominguez's base hit.
