Ryu gets nod for LA against Reds

Jun 11, 2014 - 2:36 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Korean-born lefty Hyun-Jin Ryu makes his third career start against the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday night when the Los Angeles Dodgers visit them for the third of four games at Great American Ball Park.

The 27-year-old won 14 games in his initial big-league season and notched two of those wins against the Reds while tossing 14 1/3 innings and stifling them to the tune of just five hits and four runs with one walk and 16 strikeouts.

Reds batters managed just a .109 average against him.

Ryu's been a slam-dunk commodity in six road starts in 2014, winning all five decisions while holding foes to a .204 average and just four runs in 38 innings of work.

He's won four consecutive starts overall, including a road date at Colorado on June 6 in which he gave up two runs on eight hits in six innings of a 7-2 triumph.

Ryu faces Cincinnati ace Johnny Cueto, who began the season with four wins in five decisions but has since slumped to just one win in his last four.

Cueto was pulled after his shortest outing of the season in his last start on June 6 against Philadelphia after allowing four runs on six hits in just five innings. The loss raised his earned run average from 1.68 to 1.97.

He gave up 10 runs in his first 11 starts of 2014, but has been tagged for 16 in the last four, including eight in a 9-4 loss to Washington on May 20 that began the skid.

Cueto's won just once in seven career starts against the Dodgers while posting a respectable 3.19 ERA and holding Los Angeles hitters to a .247 average.

On Tuesday, Josh Beckett allowed just two hits and a walk over six scoreless innings to help the Dodgers to a 6-1 win over the Reds.

Beckett (4-3), who dropped his last two starts after a no-hitter against the Phillies on May 25, struck out seven and allowed one runner past first in the win. He has now given up two earned runs or less in six of his last seven starts.

Hanley Ramirez knocked in two runs and Adrian Gonzalez had a pair of doubles for the Dodgers.

Reds starter Mike Leake (3-6) was knocked around for five runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings.
