Feldman tries to right his own ship in finale with D'backs
Jun 12, 2014 - 2:35 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Houston Astros have been one of the hottest teams in the major leagues the last few weeks. But Scott Feldman hasn't had a lot to do with it.The veteran righty gets another chance to right that wrong on Thursday night at Minute Maid Park, where the Astros will finish off a four-game home-and- home series with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Houston is 13-5 in its last 18 games and has seen its starters compile a 2.80 earned run average in that stretch while allowing just one run apiece in two straight games with Arizona.
But Feldman was knocked around for three walks, three runs and a hit in the second inning of his last start, on Saturday against Minnesota, which resulted in the shortest start of his career -- 1 2/3 innings -- and an 8-0 loss.
One start earlier, he allowed nine runs and 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings of a 9-4 loss to Baltimore.
He gave up two runs in 5 1/3 innings against the Diamondbacks while with Baltimore last season, but got a no-decision in a game the Orioles ultimately lost, 7-6.
He's 0-1 in three starts against Arizona, but has won four straight interleague decisions in his last six starts while posting a solid 2.19 ERA.
Arizona counters with lefty Wade Miley, who's dropped three in a row since beginning the season at 3-3.
He pitched well in a no-decision in his last outing, however, allowing just two runs in seven innings against Atlanta on Saturday in a game the Diamondbacks rallied to win, 4-3, in 11 innings.
"He threw the ball very well for us," manager Kirk Gibson said. "He kept coming at them. I thought he kept the ball down a lot better."
In two lifetime starts against Houston, he's got a 1.38 ERA and won both decisions.
On Wednesday, Chris Carter homered twice and Dallas Keuchel tossed eight solid innings to lead the Astros to a 5-1 victory over the Diamondbacks.
George Springer went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored while Alex Presley supplied two hits and a run for the Astros. Keuchel (8-3) earned the win after allowing just one run on four hits with five strikeouts.
Aaron Hill homered and Brandon McCarthy (1-9) was tagged with the loss after giving up five runs on eight hits in six-plus innings.
