Red Sox go for another home win over Tribe
Jun 14, 2014 - 1:48 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Boston Red Sox will try to extend their home winning streak to eight games on Saturday night as their four-game series with the Cleveland Indians continues at Fenway Park. The Red Sox enjoyed an offensive explosion on Friday night on their way to a 10-3 victory.
After Cleveland scored the first two runs of the game in the top of the second, Boston answered back with three in the bottom of the inning and never looked back on its way to a season high in runs.
Dustin Pedroia, Mike Napoli and A.J. Pierzynski all finished with two RBI, and Xander Bogaerts blasted his sixth homer of the season. Eight of nine players collected at least one hit in the balanced effort.
"When there's contributions up and down the lineup, certain guys don't feel like they have to get something done if they're at the plate with runners in scoring position," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "To know and trust one another up and down the lineup, that's what makes us tick best."
The ample run support was more than enough for John Lackey (8-4) to work with, as he yielded three earned runs over 6 2/3 innings to win his second straight start.
Justin Masterson (4-5) lasted only two innings for the Indians, giving up three hits, four walks and five earned runs.
Carlos Santana's eighth home run of the season gave the road team a brief lead in the second. Michael Brantley added an RBI double in the third and finished 2-for-4 to raise his average to .316.
T.J. House will get the call for the Indians on Saturday. The rookie has a 5.24 ERA through five appearances (four starts) this season and is still in search of his first-career win.
House had his shortest start of the year his last time out, as he lasted just 3 1/3 innings on June 9 and allowed six hits and five earned runs, but he escaped with a no-decision as the Indians blew out the Rangers, 17-7.
The 24-year-old southpaw had an effective start against the Red Sox earlier this month, giving up two earned runs over 5 2/3 innings of work on June 3.
Boston will counter with Jake Peavy, who's struggled on the campaign at just 1-4 with a 4.76 ERA.
Peavy pitched seven innings on June 9 and struck out seven, but he allowed eight hits, including three home runs, and four earned runs as he was saddled with the loss. He's now gone eight straight starts without a win despite lasting at least six innings in seven of those outings.
In 12 career starts against the Indians, Peavy is 5-4 with a 4.18 ERA.
The Red Sox's two straight wins over the Indians come on the heels of being swept during a three-game series in Cleveland earlier this month.
