Braves eye rebound effort against Phillies

Jun 17, 2014 - 2:50 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Atlanta Braves will try to bounce back into the win column when they resume a three-game series with the NL East-rival Philadelphia Phillies Tuesday at Turner Field.

The Braves dropped a 6-1 decision in 13 innings Monday night and lost for the fourth time in six tries after winning a weekend series with the LA Angels. Atlanta reliever David Hale was reached for five runs -- two earned -- in the top of the 13th inning to absorb the loss.

"Sometimes these things happen. You have to suck it up and learn how to move on," said Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez. "This is the second time in the week our bullpen has had to go this long in extra innings."

Braves starter Julio Teheran struck out six and walked none over eight strong innings, allowing just a run on a homer by Ryan Howard.

Andrelton Simmons had the lone RBI for the Braves, while Freddie Freeman and Chris Johnson had three hits apiece. Evan Gattis went 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 16 games.

Atlanta is a half-game ahead of Washington for the NL East lead and will send Ervin Santana to the mound Tuesday. Santana is 5-3 with a 4.09 earned run average and has lost three of his last four decisions, including Thursday's 10-3 defeat at Colorado in which he gave up six runs in 6 1/3 innings.

Santana has a 3-1 mark in five home starts this season and is 1-0 with a 0.69 ERA in two career starts (13 innings) against the Phillies.

The Phillies pulled within 5 1/2 games of the Braves in the NL East with their late rally and won for the fifth time in the last seven games. Marlon Byrd and Reid Brignac both had RBI hits in the 13th inning for the Phillies, who lost two of three at home to the Chicago Cubs this weekend.

Brignac had a triple in the 13th and finished with a team-high three hits.

Cole Hamels pitched seven scoreless innings and reliever Antonio Bastardo tossed the last two innings for the win.

"All you can do is take care of the things you can control, like going out there and throwing up as many zeroes as you can," said Hamels. "You can't expect your offense to throw up numbers every game and to hit home runs every game."

Hamels' scoreless streak reached 23 2/3 innings.

Prior to the game, the Phillies placed outfielder Tony Gwynn, Jr. on the bereavement list after the death of his father, Hall-of-Fame outfielder Tony Gwynn.

Kyle Kendrick gets the start for the Phillies Tuesday and he is 2-6 with a 4.09 ERA. Kendrick has won two of his last four starts (2-1) and allowed two runs (1 earned) in Thursday's 7-3 victory over San Diego. The right-hander is 0-3 in six road assignments this season, but has a 7-2 record with a 3.28 ERA in 21 career games (15 starts) against the Braves.

The Phillies lost two of three home meetings with the Braves in mid-April.
