Padres score 3 in the 9th to beat Dodgers
Jun 21, 2014 - 7:19 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Will Venable doubled home the tying run in the bottom of the ninth and scored the winning run on Everth Cabrera's sacrifice fly as the San Diego Padres rallied to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, 6-5, in the opener of a three-game series at Petco Park.Alexi Amarista singled off Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen (0-3) to begin the home ninth and scored on double to left field by pinch-hitter Carlos Quentin.
Pitcher Andrew Cashner entered as a pinch-runner and hustled home when Venable found the gap in left-center field. After moving to third base on a Rene Rivera sacrifice bunt, Venable scored easily on Cabrera's fly ball to right against Jansen, who suffered his third blown save of the season.
"They just kept hitting him. You can't say they were flares or anything. They hit a ball down the line for a double, they hit a ball in the gap. Even the last ball is hit good. They seemed to square everything up tonight," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said.
Seth Smith belted two solo homers and doubled for the Padres, who have won three straight games. Dale Thayer (3-2) earned the win after working out of a first-and-third jam in the top of the ninth.
Yasiel Puig knocked in two runs with a single in the fifth for Los Angeles before leaving in the eighth with a mild left hip muscle strain.
The Dodgers were coming off a three-game sweep of the Colorado Rockies, punctuated by Clayton Kershaw's no-hitter in Wednesday's finale.
Dee Gordon tripled off San Diego starter Ian Kennedy to begin the game and scored on a wild throw by second baseman Jace Peterson. Adrian Gonzalez doubled with two outs in the first and scored on Matt Kemp's single.
Smith homered to center off Los Angeles' Dan Haren in the bottom of the first, and it remained a 2-1 game until the fifth.
After knocking in a pair and advancing to third on a throwing error, Puig scored on a Gonzalez sacrifice fly to make it 5-1.
The Padres then began to chip away.
Jake Goebbert, making his major league debut, lined a pinch-hit single to score Amarista, who led off the home fifth with a double prior to swiping third base with one out.
Smith again homered off Haren -- this time to right field -- to open the sixth.
Game Notes
Haren allowed three runs on five hits over 5 2/3 innings ... Kennedy gave up five runs -- four earned -- on seven hits in five full frames ... Kemp extended his hitting streak to eight games.
