Odorizzi Ks 10, Rays shut out Astros
Jun 22, 2014 - 6:34 AM St. Petersburg, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Jake Odorizzi had 10 strikeouts and combined with two relievers to throw a one-hit shutout, leading the Tampa Bay Rays to an 8-0 win over the Houston Astros on Saturday.Odorizzi (3-7) gave up a hit and two walks in 7 1/3 innings -- the only three Astros baserunners in the game.
The Rays have won two of three so far in the four-game series between the teams with the two worst records in the AL.
"It's the kind of game we're capable of, absolutely," said Rays manager Joe Maddon. "Finally got the hits that we needed to. The pitching was outstanding. Jake was really good."
Astros righty Jake Buchanan (0-1) made his major league debut and was charged with five runs on eight hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings.
Odorizzi retired the first 10 Astros batters before giving up a one-out single to Jose Altuve in the fourth inning. George Springer followed with a walk -- the only Houston baserunners until Altuve walked with two outs in the sixth.
Odorizzi set down the next five hitters. Brad Boxberger and Kirby Yates teamed up to retire the last five.
"It looked like he settled down and got ground ball after ground ball," Astros manager Bo Porter said of Odorizzi.
Buchanan faced eight batters in his first major league inning. Ben Zobrist hit a one-out single and scored Tampa Bay's first run on Kevin Kiermaier's double to the right-field wall.
Evan Longoria followed with a single and Kiermaier scored on James Loney's base hit to make it 2-0.
Buchanan hit Longoria with his first pitch in the fifth inning, leading to a three-run Tampa Bay rally. Longoria stole second and scored on Brandon Guyer's single, with Buchanan pulled after Matt Joyce hit an RBI double off the glove of a diving Springer in right field.
Jerome Williams got the second out, but served up an RBI double to Ryan Hanigan that gave the Rays a 5-0 lead.
Loney had a two-run single during a three-run eighth inning, with the other scoring on a wild pitch.
Game Notes
Odorizzi came within one strikeout of tying a career-high. He struck out 11 against Cleveland on May 9 ... In addition to calling up Buchanan, the Astros transferred right-hander Jose Cisnero (elbow) from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL on Saturday. They also optioned Paul Clemens to Oklahoma City and sent fellow righty Anthony Bass on a rehab assignment to Class-A Quad Cities.
