LaRoche powers Nationals past Brewers
Jun 24, 2014 - 5:08 AM Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Adam LaRoche drove in all three Washington runs with a third-inning homer to lead the Nationals to a 3-0 victory over the Brewers in the opener of a three-game set.Jayson Werth finished 3-for-4 with a run scored and Ian Desmond had two hits for the Nationals, who won their third straight game.
Gio Gonzalez (4-4) won his second straight game since coming off the disabled list after giving up just three hits and four walks with five strikeouts over six scoreless innings.
"It's a huge accomplishment coming back, especially with a team like that," Gonzalez said. "I wanted to make a statement."
Ryan Braun doubled and Jonathan Lucroy and Mark Reynolds both singled for Milwaukee, which saw its four-game win streak come to an end after mustering just three hits.
Matt Garza (4-5) was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs on five hits and two walks with seven strikeouts across seven frames.
The Nationals loaded the bases off Garza with no outs in the second. Garza escaped unscathed after fanning Danny Espinosa and Jose Lobaton before getting Gonzalez to ground into a force out.
Washington went ahead 3-0 in the third. Anthony Rendon drew a one-out walk and Werth singled before LaRoche brought them around with his three-run blast to center.
"We lost 3-0, it was a slider," Garza said of the homer. "I wish I could take it back."
Milwaukee stranded runners in scoring position in the third and fourth. It threatened in the third by loading the bases with two outs, but Carlos Gomez flied out to left.
In the fourth, Reynolds walked with two outs, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before Jean Segura popped out to end the inning.
Tyler Clippard struck out the side in the ninth for his first save of the season.
Game Notes
Gomez had hit in 18 straight games and reached base safely in 35 consecutive contests, but struck out after working 12 pitches in his final at-bat. He finished 0-for-4 ... Garza lost his first game since a 3-0 loss to the Cubs on May 17 ... Nationals manager Matt Williams was ejected during the second after arguing with home plate umpire Mark Wegner. It was his first ejection as Washington's manager ... LaRoche has homered in his last three games at Miller Park ... This is the first time in 115 meetings that the Nationals and Brewers opposed each other as pair of first-place teams.
