Brewers drop struggling Rockies
Jun 27, 2014 - 4:33 AM Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Rickie Weeks was a triple shy of the cycle and the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Colorado Rockies, 7-4, in the opener of a four-game set at Miller Park.Aramis Ramirez and Scooter Gennett each supplied two-run homers for Milwaukee, which has won six of its last eight overall and continued its success against Colorado.
The Brewers have now won four straight over the Rockies after sweeping a three-game set at Coors Field this past weekend.
Wily Peralta (9-5) continued his recent dominance, though he did give up four runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts over six innings to record his fifth win in as many starts.
"I thought the last three outings, (Wily) has pitched well, but he's not locked in," said Brewers manager Ron Roenicke. "Now he's struggling to get through the lineups."
Christian Friedrich (0-2) took the loss after surrendering five runs on nine hits with eight strikeouts in four innings of work.
"He gave up a few runs early, a couple of home runs," said Rockies manager Walt Weiss of Friedrich. "I felt like he battled and hung in there."
Ryan Wheeler's grand slam was the only offense for Colorado, which has lost nine of its last 10.
Weeks didn't wait long to put Milwaukee on the board, depositing Friedrich's first pitch into the seats in left for a 1-0 advantage.
Ryan Braun followed with a walk and Ramirez hammered an 0-2 fastball over the wall in left to increase the cushion to 3-0.
Singles from Justin Morneau, Troy Tulowitzki and Corey Dickerson loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth.
Peralta struck out Wilin Rosario for the first out in the inning before Wheeler connected with his first career grand slam to put the Rockies in front.
The Brewers jumped ahead in the fifth as Weeks doubled and Braun singled to put runners at the corners to begin the inning. Jonathan Lucroy then slapped a single to center that plated Weeks to tie the game.
Ramirez walked to load the bases later in the frame before Khris Davis scored Braun with a sacrifice fly to right, giving Milwaukee a 5-4 edge.
Rob Wooten relieved Peralta to begin the seventh and got the first out in the inning, then allowed a single to Charlie Blackmon and a walk to Drew Stubbs which ended his night.
Will Smith was called upon to face the heart of Colorado's order. Morneau struck out and Tulowitzki walked to load the bases, but Smith struck out Dickerson with a steady diet of sliders to end the threat.
Michael McKenry doubled to left to lead off the eighth, however, he was stranded after a pair of groundouts and a strikeout from Brandon Barnes.
"The bullpen was really good," said Roenicke.
Pinch-hitter Gennett gave the Brewers some insurance in the home half of the eighth with a two-run shot to right for a 7-4 advantage.
Francisco Rodriguez entered in the ninth and set the Rockies down in order to record his 26th save.
