Young hopes for some more home cooking in opener with Tribe
Jun 27, 2014 - 2:45 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Young hopes to continue his home dominance on Friday when the Seattle Mariners open a three-game series versus the Cleveland Indians at Safeco Field.Young is 6-4 overall this season, but is an impressive 4-1 in seven starts at Safeco this season. He is also 6-1 with a 3.19 ERA in 10 outings lifetime there.
The 35-year-old righty did not get a decision on Saturday in Kansas City, but pitched well, as he allowed just a run and three hits in seven innings of his team's 2-1 win.
Young beat the Indians the only other time he faced them, holding them to just two hits over eight scoreless innings back in 2005.
Seattle enters this series on a bit of a roll, having won eight of its past 11 games and has put itself into the playoff picture by going 15-9 in June. A big reason behind the recent surge has been the play of catcher Mike Zunino, who has homered in four of his last five games. Third baseman Kyle Seager has also been a force at the plate, batting .593 with 15 RBI over his last seven home games.
"He (Seager) knows what he's doing at the plate," Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon said. "But I probably expect a little bit more than you guys (the media). I think there's big room for improvement, and he's doing a nice job and he's swing the bat, he's hitting some home runs, he's driving in some runs, but I've been around the game a long time and Kyle Seager is not a .260 hitter."
Hoping to slow that pair down on Friday will be young righty Trevor Bauer, who is 2-3 with a 4.40 ERA this season. Bauer did not get a decision on Saturday against Detroit, but did not pitch well, as he allowed four runs and eight hits in 6 1/3 innings. Three of those hits left the park in his team's 5-4 loss.
"He made some mistakes and paid for them," manager Terry Francona said.
As good as Young has been at home this season, Bauer has been just as bad away from it. In fact, he has still yet to win a road start in his career, going 0-4 with a 7.53 ERA in seven games.
Cleveland snapped a four-game losing streak on Wednesday, as Corey Kluber pitched seven strong innings and Michael Brantley added a home run and two RBI to help the Tribe get past Arizona, 6-1.
"When you get early run support, you can pitch a little bit different," Kluber said. "Different mindset out there pitching with the lead than if its tied or you're down. Run support is always nice."
The Indians won their season series with Seattle 5-2 last year and haven't lost a season series to the Mariners since going 4-5 in 2010
