Final
Yankees blank Red Sox
Jun 28, 2014 - 3:57 AM Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Kelly Johnson and Brian McCann each belted two-run homers and Brett Gardner added a solo shot, as the New York Yankees dominated the Boston Red Sox, 6-0, in the latest installment between the AL East rivals.Derek Jeter, who turned 40 on Thursday, had two hits and scored once in New York's second straight win following a four-game skid.
Vidal Nuno finally won a start at home for the first time in his career. Nuno (2-4) allowed two hits over 5 2/3 frames.
The lefty had been 0-4 in eight previous career home starts, but Nuno received early run support, as the Yankees improved to 6-2 against the Red Sox this season.
"He didn't have a real long inning. He stayed away from that," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "He located the ball extremely well tonight."
Brandon Workman (1-1) yielded seven hits and four runs over seven innings to suffer his first loss since Sept. 8, 2013 at Yankee Stadium. That's when he uncorked a wild pitch in the ninth inning, allowing Ichiro Suzuki to score the winning run.
Circumstances never got to a dramatic finish Friday, although there were a few highlight plays on the defensive side. Suzuki made a diving grab of a ball hit by Stephen Drew to conclude the top of the second and Brock Holt made a leaping catch at the wall in right to rob Brian Roberts of a potential homer in the bottom of the frame. Holt made a diving grab in the eighth.
The Yankees took the lead in the first inning. Jeter singled to right, Jacoby Ellsbury doubled, and then Mark Teixeira lifted a sacrifice fly to left.
Workman escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the third, but Johnson and Gardner clubbed consecutive homers in the fourth. Johnson's blast deep into the seats in right came with McCann aboard. Gardner then homered barely over the wall in right for a 4-0 lead.
Nuno didn't give up a hit past the third inning and was replaced by Dellin Betances after walking David Ortiz with two down in the sixth. That snapped a streak of 10 straight Boston batters retired by Nuno.
Betances walked Mike Napoli, but pinch-hitter Daniel Nava grounded into a force out at third.
Drew's ground-rule double to left broke an 0-for-29 slump in the top of the seventh, but Betances fanned Jackie Bradley Jr. to end the inning.
"The base hit with a guy in scoring position has been elusive. It was again tonight," Red Sox manager John Farrell said.
McCann homered to the second deck in right off Craig Breslow in the eighth. Teixeira was aboard after leading off the inning with a single.
