Greinke shoots for 10th win against Cardinals

Jun 28, 2014 - 2:28 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Zack Greinke takes another crack at win No. 10 on Saturday when the Los Angeles Dodgers resume a four-game series versus the St. Louis Cardinals at Dodger Stadium.

Greinke had his worst start of the season on Monday in Kansas City - the team for which he won an American League Cy Young Award back in 2009 - to the tune of five runs and 11 hits in 5 2/3 innings, as he fell to 9-4 on the year to go along with a still stingy 2.89 ERA.

"The last game I was trying to go deeper in the game and was too fine and made 116 pitches in six innings with only six hits," he said. "Today, I was trying to throw strikes and gave up hits. I have to find a happy medium."

Greinke has impressive numbers versus over the course of his career, posting an 8-3 mark with a 3.10 ERA in 12 games (10 starts).

St. Louis, meanwhile, will turn to righty Lance Lynn, who was brilliant in beating the Colorado Rockies his last time out. Lynn scattered three hits and struck out seven over eight scoreless innings in that one to improve to 8-5, while lowering his ERA to 2.90.

"Lance was terrific," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. "He had the four- seamer and the two-seamer working. And the slider-cutter had more depth than it's had. ... But he really did it with controlling the bottom of the zone with his two fastballs."

Lynn is a perfect 2-0 in three starts against the Dodgers with a 2.50 ERA.

On Friday, Jhonny Peralta hit the tie-breaking two- run double in the fifth inning to propel St. Louis to a 3-1 win. Yadier Molina homered, while Seth Maness (3-2) gave up just one hit over 2 1/3 innings to get the win, the Cardinals fifth in seven tries.

Trevor Rosenthal pitched the ninth for his 24th save.

"We have been pretty good defensively all season. Those defensive plays we made came at a good time tonight," Allen Craig said.

Hyun-Jin Ryu (9-4) fanned seven over seven innings, but gave up nine hits and three runs to lose for only the second time in his last eight starts.

"Ryu was good, he changed speeds and threw the ball to both sides of the plate. They made some plays, they're a good ballclub," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said.

Dee Gordon totaled three hits, including an RBI single, for the Dodgers. LA had a three-game winning streak broken and lost for only the third time in its last 11 games.

This series, of course, is the first between these teams since the Cardinals defeated the Dodgers, four games to two, in the NLCS. Los Angeles did win the season series, however, 4-3.
