Braves take aim at 10th straight win

Jul 6, 2014 - 1:53 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Wade Miley takes aim at his first win in almost two months on Sunday when the Arizona Diamondbacks try to salvage the finale of their three-game series with the red-hot Atlanta Braves at Turner Field.

Miley, though, will have his work cut out for him against an Atlanta team that has now won nine in a row after a 10-4 shellacking of the D-backs on Saturday.

The Braves pounded out 14 hits, including three from Christian Bethancourt, while receiving eight solid innings from Aaron Harang to extend their streak. Justin Upton added a two-run homer and finished 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Freddie Freeman collected two hits -- including an RBI triple -- and three runs scored.

"We've been swinging the bat pretty well," said Andrelton Simmons, who had four RBI. "We haven't hit a lot of home runs but we've scored a lot of runs. It's been a lot of hits, a lot of clutch hits."

Harang (8-6) overcame a rough first inning to hold Arizona to four runs -- three earned -- on nine hits and win his third consecutive start.

Mike Bolsinger (1-5) lasted just 3 2/3 innings for the Diamondbacks, serving up 10 hits that led to seven runs -- five earned.

Miguel Montero ended 3-for-4 with an RBI to pace Arizona offensively, with Ender Inciarte belting a solo homer and Gerardo Parra going 2-for-3 with an RBI in defeat.

Miley, meanwhile, pitched well his last time out in Pittsburgh, but did not get a decision, despite giving up just two runs and striking out 10 over eight innings in his team's 3-2 loss.

"He was in total command of that game," D-backs manager Kirk Gibson said.

Two straight hits, though, to lead off the inning prompted Gibson to bring in closer Addison Reed, who promptly gave up the winning run.

"In the ninth, I didn't make good pitches," Miley said. "I'd kind of been making pitches all night, but I didn't make them when I needed to. That's what happens. I felt very strong. I was trying a little too hard to make good pitches. I kind of left them up."

Miley, who is 0-2 lifetime versus the Braves, is now winless in his last nine starts and hasn't won since beating the Chicago White Sox back on May 10. He is 3-6 on the year to go along with a 4.61 ERA.

Atlanta turns to righty Alex Wood, who is 6-6 with a 3.19 ERA. Wood did not get a decision on Monday versus the New York Mets, as he allowed three runs and six hits over six innings. He also fanned seven in his team's 5-3 triumph.

This will be his first-ever start versus the D-backs.

The D-backs have lost 11 of their last 12 in Atlanta.
