Alvarez tries to stretch unbeaten streak against Cards
Jul 6, 2014 - 1:55 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Miami right-hander Henderson Alvarez carries a nine-game unbeaten streak into Sunday's rubber match of a three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals.Alvarez is 3-0 since a May 11 loss at San Diego. He's coming off a seven- inning no-decision against the Phillies on Tuesday. Alvarez has never faced the Cardinals.
St. Louis counters with Marco Gonzales, who will make his third career start after a call up from the Double-A level on June 25. His first major league decision resulted in a loss Tuesday against the Giants when he allowed five runs in 4 1/3 innings of a 5-0 final at AT&T Park.
Yesterday at Busch Stadium, Jeff Baker struck a go-ahead, pinch-hit RBI single in the top of the ninth inning to give the Marlins a 6-5 victory. Casey McGehee added a game-tying hit in the ninth, while Christian Yelich launched a three-run homer in the seventh for the Marlins, who had dropped their previous two contests.
"That was an All-Star at-bat by Casey McGehee right there," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said, referring to the single to right that scored Donovan Solano.
McGehee fouled off five 3-2 pitches before getting the tying hit.
Mike Dunn (6-4) tossed a scoreless eighth before Steve Cishek locked it down in the bottom of the ninth to earn his 19th save.
Allen Craig hit a two-run homer and Jhonny Peralta added a solo shot for the Cardinals, whose three-game win streak came to an end. Matt Holliday drove in a run and scored twice.
Trevor Rosenthal (0-4) took the loss and the blown save, charged with two runs on two hits while retiring one batter.
The Cardinals blew a 5-1 lead.
"It's disappointing. Many times you don't have that kind of a lead," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. "We had some nice offense to give us a little bit of room and that went away in a hurry. Guys worked hard to get us in the last inning and we just didn't have enough to finish."
Following the contest, the Marlins made several roster moves: activating infielder Adeiny Hechavarria from the 15-day disabled list; reinstated pitcher Tom Koehler from the paternity list; optioned outfielder Jake Marisnick and pitcher Andrew Heaney to Triple-A New Orleans.
This marks the first series of the season between these two teams. The Cards won four of six against Miami in 2013.
