Brown, Utley power Phils past Brewers
Jul 9, 2014 - 6:25 AM Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Domonic Brown homered and drove in three runs and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Milwaukee Brewers 9-7 on Tuesday.Chase Utley also had three RBI for the Phillies, who have won the first two games of the four-game series after being swept in Pittsburgh at the tail end of a 3-13 stretch.
They won despite starter Kyle Kendrick (4-8) giving up seven runs on 11 hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Five of the runs came in the first inning on Scooter Gennett's solo homer and Lyle Overbay's grand slam. Mark Reynolds added a two-run shot for the Brewers, who fell to 1-7 in their last eight games.
Wily Peralta (9-6) went just 4 1/3 innings for Milwaukee. He gave up nine runs on eight hits and three walks.
"(Peralta) wasn't on his game. We need to get him back on his game," said Brewers manager Ron Roenicke. "We need to get him confident. We need this guy. He's a big part of that rotation.
The Phillies manufactured a run in the first inning after Ben Revere led off with a single, went to third base on a wild pitch and a groundout, and scored on Utley's sacrifice fly.
But Gennett's one-out blast to right in the bottom of the first tied the score and Overbay's grand slam gave the Brewers a 5-1 lead. The blast into the second deck behind right field scored Jonathan Lucroy, who had singled, and Aramis Ramirez and Kris Davis, who both walked.
The Phillies bounced back to take the lead, sending 11 batters to the plate in the second inning and scoring five runs. Koyie Hill knocked in the first with a bases-loaded, no-out infield single, Revere added a two-run ground-rule double and Utley drove in two with a single to make it 6-5.
Brown homered for the first time since June 14, lining a changeup from Peralta over the right-field wall in the third inning for a two-run Phillies lead.
"He had a good, level swing on the home run," Philadelphia manager Ryne Sandberg said. "It was a line drive. Had a good look about it."
Peralta came out after walking Ryan Howard and giving up a one-out single to Cody Asche in the fifth inning. Brown greeted Tom Gorzelanny with a two-run single for a 9-5 Phillies lead.
Logan Schafer singled and Reynolds slapped a homer the other way to right to get the Brewers within 9-7 in the sixth. Justin De Fratus relieved Kendrick with runners at second and third and got Ramirez on a ground out to end the inning.
Jake Diekman struck out two Brewers in the seventh, Ken Giles worked around two singles in the eighth and Jonathan Papelbon threw a perfect ninth for his 21st save.
Game Notes
Kendrick's seven runs and 11 hits given up matched career highs ... Overbay hit his fourth homer of the season ... Giles, a rookie, lowered his ERA to 0.71 ERA in 12 appearances.
