Hernandez shines as Phillies beat Brewers
Jul 10, 2014 - 4:55 AM Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley homered to back eight strong innings from Roberto Hernandez, as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Milwaukee Brewers, 4-1, on Wednesday.Hernandez (4-8) gave up one run on three hits with three strikeouts and two walks for the Phillies, who have won the first three contests of this four- game series.
"It was impressive," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said of Hernandez's outing. "It looked like the ball was darting both ways."
Lyle Overbay drove in the lone run for the Brewers, who have lost four in a row. Kyle Lohse (9-4) allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out eight over eight innings.
"I thought he threw better than what the numbers were," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said of Lohse. "Made the mistake on Utley."
Utley's two-out homer in the first made it 1-0 Philadelphia.
The Brewers tied things up in the second. Aramis Ramirez reached on an infield single, moved to second on Khris Davis' groundout and raced home on Overbay's single to center.
Milwaukee left a runner on third in the fifth. Logan Schafer walked, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and moved to third when Carlos Gomez flied out to right. But Jean Segura grounded out to end the inning.
The Phillies grabbed a 3-1 lead on Rollins' two-run homer in the sixth. Cameron Rupp led off with a single and crossed the plate on Rollins' two-out blast to right.
Philadelphia tacked on another run in the seventh. Marlon Byrd and Cody Asche singled to put men on first and second. Byrd scored on Rupp's two-out single to center.
Hernandez retired the final 12 batters he faced, then Jonathan Papelbon tossed a perfect ninth to pick up his 22nd save of the season.
