Ryu, Dodgers hope for series win over Padres

Jul 13, 2014 - 2:51 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Hyun-Jin Ryu will try to send the Los Angeles Dodgers into the All-Star break with a series victory as he gets the call on Sunday afternoon for the finale of a four-game set with the San Diego Padres.

The left-handed Ryu will also be looking to rebound after failing to log at least six innings for the first time in 10 starts last time out. He was drilled for seven runs and 10 hits in 2 1/3 innings of a loss to Detroit on Tuesday.

Ryu dropped to 9-5 with a 3.65 earned run average on the year as he posted his shortest outing since logging just two innings of work versus San Francisco on April 4.

"It wasn't so much strikes and balls, it was actually the amount of hits I gave up," said Ryu on Los Angeles' website. "I let my team down after they scored five runs. I had a cushion and didn't capitalize. Nothing was working. My command was not there. I'd miss by a foot or right down the middle, nothing on the edges. I learned again that with major league hitters, you can't pitch in the middle."

The 27-year-old looks to rebound today against a Padres club that he is 1-0 against this year in two starts with a 0.69 ERA, giving up one run over 13 innings.

Right-hander Tyson Ross counters for the Padres and he sits at 7-9 on the season despite an excellent 2.93 ERA. He has lost five of his last six decisions and is 1-3 over his last four outings despite not giving up more than two earned runs in any of those games.

Ross suffered a 2-1 loss at Colorado on Tuesday, yielding both runs on six hits and no walks over six innings.

The 27-year-old takes aim at his first career victory over the Dodgers, who he is 0-3 against with a 3.33 ERA in six meetings (4 starts).

After San Diego evened this series with a win on Friday, the Dodgers claimed a 1-0 victory last night on A.J. Ellis' sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning.

After Ian Kennedy tossed eight dominant innings for the Padres, Kevin Quackenbush (1-2) came on for the ninth and gave up a leadoff double to Adrian Gonzalez before Los Angeles eventually loaded the bases. Gonzalez then scored without a throw on Ellis' ball to deep right field.

"Obviously he's the right guy for the situation," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said of Ellis. "He's going to make you throw a strike."

Gonzalez had two of Los Angeles' four hits in the game as the Dodgers beat the Padres for the sixth time in nine meetings this year.

Paul Maholm made his first start since May 14 for Los Angeles and shined, yielding just two hits over six-plus innings of work. Brandon League and J.P. Howell each worked scoreless innings in relief and Kenley Jansen pitched out of a jam in the ninth to earn the win.

While the Dodgers sit a game above the Giants for first place in the NL West, the Padres fell 11 games off the pace with their sixth loss in eight games.

"Our pitching has been really good," Padres manager Bud Black said. "We've got to get our bats going."

Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig was ejected in the bottom of the third inning for arguing with home plate umpire David Rackley after striking out looking.
